Facepalm Moment

As I sit here at my mind numbing job I am thinking about drones (go figure) and flying after work.

An issue I was having was how often my previous outdoor attempts were spent retrieving my drone from the neighbor's yard when the wind picked up to any degree.........

Take it off low rates! Makes sense why I couldn't bank enough to resist.

I hear ya bro my mind is being numbed too as I run a cnc machine bored but my lunch break is coming up and I'm going to fly my qx90 around inside the shop!

At the machine shop I work at there is a perfect course for flying micro quads. It involves maneuvering around a set of industrial shelving in a circle.

One of the straight aways has some electro-plating tanks to one side and if you crash into one of those your quad is history! It really helps you develop some skills.

I'm a phone jockey, so the best I could do is anger co-workers as I buzzed them if I flew in here but I'd get a write up as soon as I buzzed by a camera. :)

Take it you've lost a quad or two to the tanks?

I've come close to losing my quad before because I forgot to take it of low rates and the wind caught it. I was up around 200 feet or so when I realized it was still on low. Now when I fly that quad (syma x8) the first thing I do is switch to high. It becomes a habit after a while.

My mind isn't numb yet, as it's a new job - but I just don't feel like working much today. Plus my boss is out, so it's an unofficial web surfing day.

Lol, he would be happy to see his buddy flying around.

I'm more concerned about the pair of hawks that live in the trees around my house.

Was outside earlier. Nice and calm. "Let's go in and get the 'eggsplorer.'" Come out to find a blasting (in comparison) wind blowing.

Mine is indoor only. Yeah hawks do not mess around. Not only do we have hawks and other large birds, but we also have packs of coyotes and many sad neighbors with missing small pets.

Once, I tied one of his toys to a string and flew it around the house. After he got over his fear of the noise, he attacked the toy mouse and blammo - down comes the little quad right onto the cat and floor. Now he runs and hides when he hears the props spin up.

Sounds like you have the same wind provider as I do. :)

I remember you lost a quad recently, but don't remember you replacing it. What did you end up getting?

My wife wanted me to try that and I knew that wouldn't last but once.

Still waiting to replace it. It was a gift, and the gifter bought the "insurance." I stopped at the store and asked, yes, it's covered, just bring in the receipt. The gifter has the receipt and says, "I'll stop in sometime when we're out."

The little "eggsplorer" is cute and flies well. With altitude hold is pretty easy to manage, but it doesn't fly very fast. A few minutes ago outside with enough wind to feel in my ears, the fastest forward it could go was backward at a quick walk.

My plan is to get the FAA commercial UAV license, then a quality drone on the order of Phantom 4, get some practice post some videos, get some business cards printed and start advertising real-estate, inspection and event aerial photography. I'll keep my night job, but frankly, it won't take much income to surpass my night job.

Time for a nap or I'll never make it till midnight when I get home from work.

I honestly do not have a plan other than to have fun, learn something new, and get my testosterone reload when people are being fickle. At least with this hobby, there isn't a need for others to enjoy myself (unlike bike polo, Hnefatafl, and just about all my other interests)

Hnefatafl: Now that's interesting. Perhaps all those "Roman Dodecahedrens" they find all over Europe are really Hnefatafl pieces.

Was just reminded how it can be fustrating it can be when you have questions or a need to learn and no local people to talk with, or having an unhelpful hobby shop.

Hobby shops are usually not good places for advice. A lot of the people that work in them know very little and have learned "on the job", meaning they repeat what other people who learned on the job told them. :(
