Electrical question

I recently tore the arms off my JJRC X1, cheap body, but brushless. I had a 180mm carbon frame so decided to put everything on the frame. 2s lipo got it off the ground but no punch. I had a 3s 2200 radio battery with a JST plug so decided to give it a try. Plugged it in fired it up, no smoke! My problem is that after a few minutes of flight the quad dies like low battery. Battery gets hot. The 2200 mah battery has a low discharge rate of 15c. Is that my problem or is the board from the x1 shutting down because of the increase voltage? No warmth on the boards or motors, just the battery. If you plug it back in after it shuts down it will fly full power again. Any insight on what might be causing this?

thanks

With that low of a C rating, the battery is probably just working too hard if it's the only thing that's heating up. I'dsay something around 35C would be much better

RENOV8R is probabl right, butif you are fortunate enough to have a spec sheet we could double check. Does it say anything about the motor's amp draw, or amp draw to the quad?

I will check but don't think JJRC went into that much detail. The motors are D1806. 2280 KV. ESC'S are incorporated in the board. Will check in a bit to see if the give any specs. The 3s battery is a radio battety with a 15c rating. I put board on a Goby 180 but with 3s, had plenty of punch.

Oh, so you have a better quad than I thought. The brushless motors will have specs for sure. The motors should pull around 8 amps(I have some DYS that pull about that but 0n 3S so it may be lower) so ~32amps 2.2*15 = 33amps @ 15C

You're close enough that that is likely you're problem.

I really want to see some flight videos now hahahaha, I bet that little guy is fast.

I checked the Chinese manual, no specs what so ever. I just ordered a 3s 1300mah 45c battery. going to change out the JST connector to XT 60. When it had the plastic body it flew crazy, jittery, lifting turns. Now that it's on the Goby 180, it flies so much different, more control and Rick solid stable. Still using junky transmitter. I am just waiting for it to stop running so I can put some nice electronics on the Goby. Maybe it's 4s time... lol bet I would see some smoke then!

Battery for quadcopter: 7.4V 1300mah Li Battery
This is what they chose to use. I would assume that the proprietary, all in one board/PCB is built for that voltage. Going by just the motors ain't gonna cut it.

Nothing has any heat except battery after about 3 min. of flight. Has plenty of punch, then starts losing power like it is going into low voltage. Unplug the battery, plug back in rebind then it flies again nut only for a minute then power slowly dies again. I checked voltage in battery and 2 outside cells were at 3.82 and middle cell was 3.76.

Just charged up the original 2s 1300mah and took it for a flight. Flew different than last night, battert I used last night may have been low. You could feel the weight difference and got about 5 min. of flight. Not as much punch as the 3s but was still fun to fly. Handled better than the crappy original. The Goby 180 is 4mm thick carbon fiber so it has a lot of bottom weight which is what was needed. Frame is garaunteed for life so if it breaks you get a new one. Still going to try new 3s when it gets here. 2s was a little warm but nowhere near hot as the 3s 15c lipo I had the problems with.

Changed the plug on the X1 board and put XT60 on it. Charged a 3s 45c 1300 Tatu battery and plugged it in to see what would happen. Quad has super punch and is very fast. Flew it for around 6 minutes very hard. Flew great and when she was done, couldn't get off the ground done, battery was slightly warm. Nothing on that board had any heat and all motors were cool. I guess you can run 3s on the x1 with no problems. Nice little quad now and board seems to handle the voltage just fine!

Nice to know, that certainly is an upgrade. Might check to make sure the BECs or voltage regulators are not getting a bit warm, but sounds like you really lucked out.
