Does this make sense?

Hi all,

I am just getting into quadcopters and am looking for my first serious purchase for aerial photos/videos.

What I would love to do is use a GoPro WIFI as the camera/FPV system as this seems like it would be quite cheap and decent quality. I understand that generally this cannot be done because the wifi and the controls ate both on 2.4GHz and have apparently cause loss of control/fly aways etc.

However I did notice that the phantom FC40 has switched the normal frequencies round and used 5.8Ghz for control and 2.4Ghz for it's (apparently low quality) camera/FPV.

So - if I was to get an FC40 and replace the camera with a GoPro WiFi would this work? Are there any potential issues that people with more experience can see?

Kevin.

I hope to get into FPV soon and have been doing a little bit of initial research. What I see a lot of people doing is having one high-quality camera for their aerial photography, then another camera for the FPV flying. A couple things to keep in mind...

You don't need a high quality FPV camera. If you're using goggles, the resolution on those is going to be pretty low anyway. What you do need is a very FAST FPV camera. If you use a camera for FPV that is also recording video, that will introduce a delay. It may only be half a second, but when flying FPV any amount of delay is bad. There's a youtube video here that does a latency test between several popular cameras including a GoPro Hero3.

At least one guy I know has a Mobius to record aerial video and a FatShark 600TVL for FPV flying.

I should clarify - my main desire for fpv is to allow me to frame shots. I intend to fly line of sight with a quick look at the screen to confirm I am videoing what I am after.

In that case, you may be fine. A buddy of mine was at a Zombie Walk recently and there was a guy with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ taking aerial footage. I don't know what all gear he was using, but he was flying line-of-site and glancing at the video feed on an iPhone to check the framing of the shots.

Just to let you know, though, a friend of mine at work has a Phantom. I don't know what model. But the ribbon cable on the gimble broke. He had to send it back to DJI. They've had it over a month now and haven't even started working on it. They're telling him it will be another 6 to 8 weeks. Just to replace a ribbon cable.
