I wanted to record 360 video with the now affordable GoPro Max and benefit from:
- Excellent GoPro Software stabilisation
- VR footage to watch on Oculus Rift later
- Reuse of my Phantom 2 (I know that time has moved on, and cooler drones are available)
- Not lose the FPV functionality of the Zenmuse, as you cannot connect the GoPro Max directly
Replace the weight of the Zenmuse HD3D (240g) with the lighter GoPro Max (165g) and a Foxeer Monster Mini 1.8mm Red FPV Camera (9g)
- Take the drone battery out
- Remove the Zenmuse Gimbal and GoPro
- Remove the CAN bus from one leg (see Phantom 2 manual page 4 item 8)
- Remove the compass from the other leg (see Phantom 2 manual page 4 item 11)
- Remove the Phanom 2 legs (you can learn how to catch it below)
- Attach GoPro base and arm with new 3M double sided foam
- Attach compass to GoPro arm with cable tie
- Open drone and move IODS mini inside as shown here
- Buy Foxteer Monster Mini 1.8mm as seen here, as it is lightweight, has a 1280x960 16:6 resolution, and a 145deg field of view, and can accept between 5V and 40V power input
- Widen Foxteer Bracket to 5mm, drill 5mm hole on top of the Phantom 2 Symbol
- Shorten a 5mm Screw to 1cm, and use a washer between bracket and drone housing (otherwise the bracket could crack the drone housing), and a self-locking nut, tighten the bracket onto the drone housing
- Learn how to solder mini cables together here
- Solder Foxeer Mini (SMC) Cables to Zenmuse Cables (ZC) as follows, based on the wiring description here: ZC1 to FMC Yellow, ZC2 to FMC Black, ZC3 to FMC Red
- Put drone battery back in, switch on, test the camera setup
- Close the housing again
- Calibrate the drone compass as shown here
- Learn how to release and catch the drone safely here
