Can the GPS software be programmed to fly 1-2 miles, take video /pics, then return home?

You can do that with APM using waypoints.

Hugh,i am new to the forum and would like to learn more about waypoints and how to program to fly from point A and do its task and then return home to point B all autonomously can this be done? i have other programing questions also please let me know if you can help. thanks J.

Are you referring to a UI or writing your own scripts in something like C or Python? There are programs that have a GUI that will do this stuff for you.
