Blade/DJI/Or Build???

Hello all,
I'm looking to get into the larger Quad world with a quad that I can use for AP and maybe a little FPV....

I'm looking at purchasing either the DJI Phantom 2 Vision + or maybe the new Blade 350 QX3 AP. My question is could I build a quad myself with all the features of one of these for less $$$? I don't mind building it and I used to build R/C Heli's with my dad years ago so I think I can handle that part. I just don't want to buy all the bits and pieces, put it all together and find out I would have been better off buying one that was RTF. If building is better then where should I start? I really appreciate everyone's help on this.

Thanks!

Hi mate yes you can , stay away from the 350qx it has lots of problems , the Naza m with GPS will give you the function you want as the Phantom has its the same FCB , really big quad are better to be 6 or 8 motors as if one motor fails it still flys , on a quad it will come down hard and if it has £400 of camera and gimbil do you want to risk it, Hobby king is the cheapest for frames etc so depend on where you are a basic 450 quad frame £9 yes that cheap is a DJI clone but does the job , i take it your in the USA as you used $ they ship from hong kong and your lucky you have more frames then we can get in uk , if your heart is set on a quad then this is a top frame to get

Thank you so much for the response... I am in the US. Looking at the naza m, would I need the lite version or the V2? Also do you have recommendations for other parts? (Motors, blades, transmitter/receiver, etc.). There's so much to choose from. I'm wanting to put together something that's fun to fly but stable enough to do some video and pics. Looks like the naza m takes care of a lot of the features I like about the DJI and blade. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Kent go for the Naza M v2 with GPS , you cant do anything till you know what frame you want and stick to that , then we can get the motors for that frame ,then this tell you what props you need ,and if its going to work if not we change motors and props till it will work , then we know what power ESCs we need for the motor prop combo , and if we need a BEC which i think the Naza M comes with , then battery which i feel will be in the range of 4000,5000mah
As for transmitter i would go for a big brand like Spektrum or futuba, i use a DX9 and its great easy to set up has voice so no need to look at transmitter if you change a switch it tell you and more

Hi mate yes they are making money on it ,but its not a bad buy , and if any thing dont work you have them to go back too, if you have the money do it mate , even if you upgrade to a bigger frame later on you can still use most parts from this the Naza m with gps is about £150 just for that

Well, I think I have enough info to make a decision. Thank you for all your help and quick responses! Looks like I picked a good forum to start with!

Any recommendations on battery? I'm looking at a 3S 5000mah LiPo, but not sure if there is a specific brand I should look at or avoid. Also, do the connectors make a difference as long as I use the same ones on the quad as the battery?

Also looking at the Taranus x9D plus transmitter with X8R receiver..... Thoughts?

Hi mate Taranus is ment to be good , take a look on rc model reviews ,on you tube he may have done a review on it , as for battery i have used nanotec they are over a year old and are still great, i have also used turnigy they are good too, hobby king now have multistar batteries these are high mah but low c rate , you dont need high c rate for a camera platfrom
