Bans, Restrictions and Public Access

Hi All,

I have been flying my P4 all around the US and various spots around the world. I love it, it’s one of the best inventions that has come along since the digital camera. There is no better way that I know, for an average person to be able to capture beautiful high definition aerial footage with near professional quality.

Sadly, it has become more and more difficult to use drones in public areas around the US. Many parks, preserves, open spaces, nature areas, etc. have restricted the use of drones. As have many local municipalities, local parks and regional recreation districts. The result is a mix mash of restrictions and local bans that make it near impossible to use these wonderful tools.

While I agree that appropriate guidelines should be prepared and enforced so as not to endanger others, impact wildlife or create a public nuisance. However, the current default stance of “just ban them” results ultimately in restricting access to public areas, specifically designed to be preserved and protected for the purpose of the public’s enjoyment. That is not acceptable and I think that we as a community of hobbyists have as much right to view and photograph these lands as any other group. I would also propose that if we don’t push for this as a group, the access will be taken from us without any discussion or perspective.

If your interested in defending our ability to use our drones, please let me know. I am working on a petition that can be used to respond to local/regional boards requesting proposed and current bans be reviewed and reconsidered.

Is the AMA doing anything in this direction?
I used to be a member many years ago, BD

I know they accept "drone" hobbyist", but have a feeling that the Old RC school of thought frowns on Drones. Although that's a guess on my part. I have not checked.

I'm sure everyone here agrees with you in principle.

The biggest problem is idiots keep doing idiotic things. So the government does what they do. Regulate.

You have 2 issues. Governments and Idiots. And they are not mutually exclusive haha.

What's a funny government policy is to deregulate the use of assault rifles and do away with CCW permits, but regulate where you can fly a drone, when you can fly a drone and require a fee paid registration for them. I think the regulated drone as opposed to unregulated fire arms is a bit on the BLIND/STUPID side of government bureaucracy. Someone is not thinking with the north side of their brain!

My reply was to ArmyVet. My statement was obvious and transparent. The next big regulation will be on the amount of noodles you can add to Spaghetti. The US government love to regulate. The even have regulated deregulation, which they do best.

I did not take your posting as a reply to me. But no harm no foul. Your statement was "obvious and transparent". Sounded like you were giving your opinion. Which we all do.

RENOV8Rs point was simply that yours sounded more like a political opinion. Which I also sensed.

I agree that Politics should be kept at a minimum on this Forum. But again, no harm no foul. We all need to vent on occasion.................

I was just illustrating government lack of differentiation when it came to their deciding what to regulate and what not to regulate. The regulation of drones seems short sighted when regulation of a deadly weapon is dismissed. I guess they are worried that we might start dropping bombs on whomever. When our hobby has to be regulated, that's when our hobby becomes political I suppose.
