Am I Missing Something?

When the Summer sun sets, the High Desert radiates its its heat away quickly, unobstructed by clouds , haze, or smog, and the temperature drops like a rock from 100 to 60 in a short time.

Agree. I've been frequenting these forums for a while and see how much trouble people have. I've also watched a lot of build videos and read countless articles. As an old tech with all the tools, materials, and know-how, I'm sure I could do a "scratch" build. But I don't want to. Something like the Hawk 5 looks very appealing and at least I know that when I get it, it's (presumably) fully functioning and I can take it from there. When something goes wrong I can fix it, but at least the starting point is a working quad. I don't know how much cheaper you can buy the parts anyway, and as you mentioned the time to build it is time that I'd rather spend out at the park flying. A scratch build might be a good winter project.

I had all the components for a build in my cart ready to buy when I decided to just buy a wizard220 instead. Yes building a quad looks like fun but flying them is what I'm really into.

Build it or buy it as long as you fly it.
