I read that there is no special adapter/cable needed to connect the QX7 to a PC for use with Freerider. Does anyone have experience with this? What kind of cable, is it provided?

No cable is provided, but you may have one laying around. You just need a USB to USB micro cable: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-Cable-Micro-Meters/dp/B003ES5ZSW

There is another option from OrangeRX - it's a USB dongle that is meant to let you go wireless, but I've not been able to get mine working on my Mac. The cable works fantastic though.

I've just gone through this process, so my advice is definitely start with FreeRider. Spend the 5 bucks so you can change the quad settings (you also get some new areas to fly - but changing settings is more important IMO). Watch Joshua Bardwell's "learn to fly FPV" videos (at least the first 5 or 6) while you play with FreeRider. I found it super helpful. Then, if you are not anti-Steam, go try Liftoff.
