Building a payload release mechanism?

Hi,
I've been trying to find a way you could make a payload release mechanism to release say a beer with a parachute on it. Have you guys done anything of the sort before? Also, I'd like to mount it on a DIY drone.

Very interesting. I will check that out. I was thinking of trying to make my own design since I have a 3D printer. I want to perhaps get something rigged up and drop some cookies or something for the little ones during their week before Christmas break (all with proper approval of course).
