Very New To Multirotors

Hi All,

I'm here hoping for some help!! i have never owned a Quad/Mutirotor but am very interested in getting into this hobby after chatting to a guy that was flying local to where i live, unfortunatley i didnt get his email address hence way in here. he was flying a DJI F550 with all bells and whistles from was could see.
i understand im not going to start with one of those but where would be the best quad/multi to start with? and where would be the best place to purchase ? ive watched many of youtube video many from THATHPIGUY but now want to start getting my hands dirty and get a kit dont really want a ready to fly. any information would be gratefully recieved.

There are many ways to start...You have many different size option with 240mm about as big as it gets for the lesser cost entry level "toy"quads.

You have camera/video options or no camera/ video option..you have basically an entire host of quads to choose from..Not all are equal but,many are great starters into the world of quads.

Look on sites like Banggood, DealsMachine, Tmart, and GearBest to see the more common "toy" kits out there...if you see a model you like then jump to youtube and check out reviews of it...Of many offered only a small hand full stand out as top performers for what they are and cost.

The hobby end can be a bit more expensive and much knowledge is needed to be successful with them.

A few recommendations from my self if i may, to get you started with more popular models and decide what you might like.

Bayang X9
JJRC 1000A
SYMA X5C-1
EACHINE H8 mini
Cheerson CX10
Hubsan X4
JJRC H8C
JJRC H5C

There is ALOT more but, just a small list to get you started.

Thanks for the advice and information. what make of transmiter/reciever would be best not to cheap but not to expensive so i can just upgrade on quad at a later date..

Think this is gonna be really hard not going for a something like a F450 or F550 and i know i shouldnt be tempted.

The best radio and receiver would be a subjective opinion..There is alot of manufacturers who make radios to meet ones need.

Two of the best are probably Futaba and Spektrum.

I suppose knowing what your budget will be will determine what you may need to settle for in a quad and radio set up.

I wouldnt however recommend something advanced from the start...I would figure that to be more of an experience of frustration than of fun and learning.

I would strongly recommend something low cost to get you started and dont think because something is labeled a "toy " that it cant teach you something along the way.

Do you know what Aileron or elevator is?..what about Yaw, pitch and roll...if you dont ,a cheap toy can teach you these things before investing alot of money into something you WILL crash at some point....lol

When you can fly a toy quad like its nothing then i would suggest moving up if you wanted to do so.

For now i recommend to you a Bayang X9 ready to fly kit for $25.00 or so...It wont be as easy as you think to fly just because its a toy.

If you want something larger, the SYMA X5C-1 is a good kit to learn with.. just a bit more costly to repair than the Bayang X9.

Hi Neil welcome to the forum , I fly with a spektrum DX9 you can pick up a really good second hand transmitter I would look at the DX6I or above , I find setting the transmitter is easy on the sepktrum you need a good transmitter that you can program and adjust this will make setting the FCB a lot better , as for the quad a 450 or 550 size is a great place to start off , hobby king clone of the DJI frames are so cheap you can buy 2 and keep one for spares there are a tough frame and if you go for the one in the link it has the PCB built in so it easy to wire up , once you know what frame you want then we can set up from there , if you want return home GPS etc then the better FCB or not cheap but there are cheap FCB that will do the job so that can be worked on later when we know what you want to spend

Hi All,
Thanks for the great advice and links. i have just purchased aSyma X5C 2.4G 6 Axis from Amazon only £38 GBP will have a play around with that and see how things go, but still very tempted to straight for the F550.

Holtneil, the link is for just the frame only does it work out cheaper to buy all the componants seperate or just go straight for the kit version?

My next build will be the f550 and as far as price verse kit or separately buing parts you will just have to decide what u want it to how much u wanna spend and go shopping and compare prices on my build if I bought the rtf 700usd if I bought the kit and I built it 400 I did lots of shopping around and got all my parts ordered for 180 give or take a few bucks ... Is anyone using the pixhawk fc

The pixhawk was one of 3 controllers I was trying to decide on for my first real build(non-kit). During my research I came across this article. After reading it I chose the XAircraft MiniX because I felt it would better suit the build and the type of flying I wanted to do. Also I know zip about programming and the MiniX takes literally 60 seconds to set up. I guess what I'm trying to say is that as amazing as the Pixhawk is it may or may not be ideal for the type of flying you do.

Hi Well what HDtaillrider said is right , but the way I look at it a kit will give what you need to fly ,It may not be the best parts as they need to make money on selling the kits( and a lot of sellers on ebay buy from HK and then add a mark up and sell on to you so paying more) , Hobby king makes money by selling 1000s of the frames and parts, they do kits too , but by not buying a kit and getting parts you can get better matched parts to do what you need , so save money on the frame and spend extra on FCB or motors
If you get as much as you can from HK as this will save on shipping ,then any thing you cant get from them buy else where , but HK do every thing really so you should be able to get it all

For me when I build the f550 or maybe a mantis x8 I want the pixhawk or arbupilot system they have very good GPS programmability I want to use it for relaste photography so when I get to where I want to take photos I can use googels 3d maps set the grid I want to run and let her go and I could set up rx to run a Gimbel but that's money and down the road a bit but the research has begun and possibilities are all there and in use now but ur right if u want to be in control and have a larger size UAV then a kkmini would be a great beginner fc has a screen right on the board u don't need a computer for the tunning it is an easy set up and a decently power full board I'll have to the article u posted @HDtallrider

Sounds like the Pixhawk is your baby! That was the point. Get the one that does what YOU want best. Holtneil is correct that many of us on the forum prefer to make a quad that is our very own instead of whatever the kit provides. A kit IS great for your 1st build. Terrific learning tool.

Lol of course that's the point of building ur own vs buying a pre built that's why I used the cc3d on my qav250 and I wanna use the pixhawk on a big bird because I can tell it what I want it to do its not my baby just a good fc is all it has an unlimited potential

Hi all thanks for the advice i starting to get the idea about whats needed, i should be recieving my syma x5c 1 upograded, shortly so looking forward to that.

Is there or does somebody who has a generic complete parts list that i could have and then do a bit of window shopping?

Any reviews on the OrangeRX any advice always helps.

Hi Orange transmitters and receivers are a clone of the spektrum DX6I, you can use orange , spektrum and lemon receivers and sat receivers , or look for a good second hand spektrum transmitter ( there has been 3 new transmitters come out so lots of good older ones like the DX6I, Dx7s ,Dx8) these are upgraded now to Dx6, Dx7,Dx9
Some times the best way to do the window shopping is to go on you tube watch videos of what guys have flying and get the spec and copy it , or look for RTF quads and improve on the spec of what they have , but most of us start by working out what we want from the quad , then find the frame for that job once you have this ,you can work on motors /props ,ESCs,FCB, Battery etc
