Some ideas on a project - lifting a heavy body - no need to be very nimble

Hi all,

Played with a load of cars and planes as a kid, did some mods, helped my dad build a few.

I've gotten into Quads recently, now I'm planning on making a star destroyer body. no specific size yet, however I've made a Hubsan Nano into a kind of Tie fighter. (Work in progress).

So reasonably larger for the Star Destroyer. I've no idea about low budget quads that can lift a half decent weight, then I'll be stripping it right back. I will figure out the materials when i have the platform.

So i guess the main question is, what quadcopter has the best lift capability for it's size for under £100? A bloody tough question lol. but any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome

Never saw your question show up in new post (why it slipped by us haha), but to answer your question, it is unlikely that you can build one at that, and anything else would be a toy grade. How much you need to lift?
 
There are a few 7.4v toy quads with large brushed motors on them..They seem to be quite powerful but an issue with these brushed motors is heat from extreme loads.

Some are well over 100g in weight and lift fpv systems but, motors dont tend to last very long.

You didnt mention what material you were making the body from (as you stated you didnt know as of yet) so, if it could be done with balsa wood it might be ok but,not sure it would handle a crash really well.

Probably be plastic as it is a collectors item that probably should not be crashed hahahaha. I am afraid to say that you might have to use hobby grade parts if you can't afford too many spills. Is the "star destroyer" a cheap toy or collector's item?

Hey Mike H. I'm surprised you didn't get into your "toy hybrid" build. Something like that could be just what flyingfishcake needs to look into.

I was under the impression he was "making" a body for it..if its something off a toy then a pic of the size and maybe a weight can help us a bit

So the plan for materials, styrofoam for shaping, possibly balsa but also carbon rods for added strength.

The Hubsan is being made into a tie fighter. I might use the Jjrc for the mellinium falcon.

The star destroyer is looking to be tricky without buying something substantial to lift it.

I've seen a couple of quads which are covered in heavy plastic, wheels to be a car etc. They have 7.2v batteries. Probably brushed. However if I strip all the plastic off, make a frame from carbon rod to hols the motors in the right places, there should hopefully be excess lift. At least that was my plan for the Udi rc.

To make the shells, I'm carving the foam, perhaps some hot wire cutting too.

I know that they will not survive many cars he's if any. I'll be careful with them honest!

Try adding weight to the frame to make it the right weight that you estimate your new frame to be. See if it lifts it, and how it flys.
