So.... re-visiting this after a while with an update.
I gave up on my drone repair and bought another second-hand drone from eBay, same brand and similar model number. After a crash I started to experience the same issues with the new drone, poor lift on the back left motor. I took the affected drone wing apart and found that there was too much give on the prop shaftto the cog, I applied some force to push them together and the problem was resolved.
This gave me the idea to re-visit my original drone. Previously I had focused on the motors, but this time I took a close look at the prop shaft and it too had way too much play. Whilst trying to push down on the shaft to fully engage it with the cog, the cog came clean off and was too loose when I put it back on the prop shaft. I then had the idea of using a few dabs of Loc-tite to the prop shaft, left if for 10 mins to cure. Then a test-flight and it took off properly - nice and square and appears to be fixed!
Got there in the end - thanks for persisting with me.
