Hi, sorry to bother you, but I would like some advice.

I am looking to build my first quad-copter. I was originally going to buy a RTF model, however, I decided it would be more fun and rewarding building it myself.

As I am a complete novice when it comes to this, I have decided to go with the below items. Any thoughts on the setup? Will it fly? Any improvements? I have chosen the Turnigy motors, Afro ESC and distribution board to save on soldering, as I have no experience of this. The Afro ESC's also come with SimonK already flashed on them. which will also help.

I will eventually look at putting a camera on it, so would like to know if it will be powerful enough? I will buy an additional larger battery for this (4000 mAH) once I’m up and running.

I will probably look to buy the Turnigy 6 or 9 channel controller once the copter has been built.

Welcome to the forums, I would suggest getting bigger props, but I am using 9x4.7 on 1240kv motors to lift my flying brick, so you should be fine depending on what camera you want. Everything looks good at first glance,, I'll look through the parts to double check.

Ok first thing I noticed is on the frame you will want either a different frame or some legs to make it higher off the ground.
Also you may want different motors those are a little big for your ESCs only because they are inefficient.

Here is a combo motor-prop set.
Here is a bigger battery, check the weight compared to the zippy.

There may be more, but this is what I picked up scanning through the pages.

That motor / prop combo is an excellent suggestion, It looks ideal, it still has the bullet connectors which will help when putting it together.

I don't fully understand how the KV scale works, I know it is to do with how fast the motor goes round. I take it a 935 KV is plenty for this quad? The motors do look a little smaller. That was the only reason I went with 1000 KV as I thought it might be more powerful, have better lift?

I am aware the frame will need some landing gear but I will sort this in the future.

I will also look for a larger battery.

Is there a way of establishing the weight of the parts prior to buying them. Are they listed on hobbyking?

Hi mate KV is rpm per 1 volt so if you have an 11.1v 3 cell And a 1200kv motor max rpm will be 13,320, most 1000 to 1200 kx on a 450 size quad have 10x4.7 props

Lower Kv usually = bigger props, which gives you more thrust and flight time, but it will be less responsive that is why smaller ones are used for racing.

That's excellent thanks for the help.

Just one more thing...... (I sound like Columbo lol), I have read the reviews on the motors on Hobby King website and they all seem good, but there are several people who are saying they are dangerous and have been exploding. I take it that is not the case? Do they need balancing?

All props need balancing, even the $80 sets. Plastic usually explodes if you don't get rid of it when you see stress cracks, and carbon fibre explodes if cracked and unbalanced, but it is a lot better. I have not had much luck with the really cheap CF, it is usually very unbalanced and if you don't see the cracks it will break during flight. But I am talking the cheapest I china site I could find.

DEFIANTLY buy spares, haha. Nobody likes waiting for props, I had a spare set and broke all but one CCW and have 3 CW. So consider buying 3 sets haha, when you break one or two out of the first set order the second, unless you are using amazon prime.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me?

I'm buidlibg my quad as above and have got the above motors recommended by GJH105775:

I am trying to buy additional props for these, but they don't seem to be the same as normal ones? They are 1045 but have a little notch in the hub where the propeller sits on top of the motor?

I have looked at the comments on the hobbyking website and they seem to suggest you can't get replacements?

Can anyone help with replacements? Many thanks.

Hmm, the notch is not needed, I think it is where prop adaptors usually go.

These will work just fine (any colour you choose), I suggest you get these for testing, and carbon fibre or maybe nylon (cheaper) for when you are ready to fly.

Nice one, thanks for your help..

Enjoying my build, was going to test the ESC's out today to make sure all was well. Got my lipo out and discovered I had the wrong connector... Argh.. No worries ive sorted it now and oredered an adapter, but can't do any testing till that arrives.

Just out of interest, I'm going to get my transmitter and receiver in the next couple of days. I don't think I'm going to want anything too special due to cost implications, I was looking at the skyfly FS i6, or the Turnigy Tgy 6 (same thing I believe) They seem OK? Although I can't find much info on them in relation to quadcopters, I believe they do work?

What do you think? Thanks again for your help.

If you can't yet get a worthwhile Tx ($20-$30 budget)then I really suggest you get the HKTR6a, and use it until you can get a real Tx.

If you get it here is a mod I did to mine. I like it, it has a range of EASILY a thousand feet, I have gone further than that, but I fly on a wide open farm with no WiFi for miles.

One of our members, @glowingturnip, has one. His comments are quite positive. Do note it is a bit smaller than most. One nice aspect is the receivers have dual antennas and also have one with PPM output for about $15 and telemetry.

Using only 4 AAs and is a nice touch.

Some came with the data cable, if not you'll need one if you wanna update the FW (there has been 3 updates).
