Hello I am building my first quad copter, I am interested in the software side of things and playing with autonomous flying wonders.

Here is a list of the parts that I have selected, my goal is a relatively cheap 1300g copter.
I will be building my own frame, I am expecting it to weigh around 300g.
I am planning on strapping a raspberry pi to it along with a bunch of sensors on top of the ardupilot.

I would love to get some feed back on if this selection is a wise one.

If you're going to be using a PI (B+?) then I'd suggest you get ~950kv motors and 12'' props, 30 amp ESCs cost would be around $260(USD)


What are your general goals? Stabilization is VERY hard to do, and there are a lot of good systems out there for this. If you want to do the software side I'd suggest you get a board and use it for stabilization, then control it how you want through your favourite microprocessor as a go between between the Rx and Rx input on the FCB.

My goals are to design an indoors navigation system with ultrasound, I will probably not be interested in creating my own stabilization for quite some time, my interests are what I can do with computer vision.
I thought that the ardupilot has stabilization software available. I am looking into those motors and props.

You might not need a 25C battery, a 10C is a good bit lighter and sufficient for most things.

No Canada, but that price range is in American dollars.

I realize I will probably have to pay more depending on where I get my parts.

Ideally a hex would be good for your situation, but it may be a bit out of your price range. Approximately how much weight would you add to it? Flying inside is a bit hard because of drifting, but with sonar modules it can be made a lot better.

You may like the looks of this for mapping also.

You can move it around with the arrows (be sure to change the quality to 1080s).

I am thinking that I will have around 500g max of payload, I am planning on having 4 sonar modules as it stands right now.

Yeah I was planning on mapping with sonar and using it as a depth perception for a camera and then have the quad explore a mall or my house.

It might be possible to cut the cost of sonar by having one module rotating and a way to know what angle the sonar module is to link with the data. Have it rotate in lets say 45 degree increments.


Looks like 950kv (or lower if you can afford them) motors, 30 amp ESCs, ~5000mAh battery, 12x4.7 SF props, KK2.1.5 board for simple stabilization, a PDB (power distribution board), and your payload (equipment). I may have missed something, but I think I got it all. That should be around $200 give or take, and shipping.

Should get 15-20 minute flight times.
