Range Extension

I have the UDI RC u829A quadcopter ( http://www.amazon.com/UDI-U829A-2-4...=1433282966&sr=8-4&keywords=udi+rc+u829+parts ) Probably one of its biggest draw backs is the range, I've read that it can only go about 100 yards from the remote. I'm not sure exactly how far it can go, because I haven't tested it yet, but I have had problems loosing connection, probably around that range. I want to increase the range of my transmitter. While searching for ways to extend the range I found this ( http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1873198&page=43 ) Is this worth trying (will it improve the range), and what would I need to do, just make sure the antenna I buy is the same frequency? Please let me know what you think, or if I need to supply any additional information, thank you.

The the black wire in the middle of the transmitter is the current antenna.

To start off the easiest and most effective to gain range is to get a high gain antenna, lucky a 2.4ghz antenna in not long. The biggest consideration is that this is really a toy grade, so it is not a full range system. But unless your on a hill you should have enough range for any type of LOS flying.

If you get a better Tx antenna you also should get a better Rx antenna. Make sure you get one optimized for 2.4 ghz.

As for having enough range for LOS flying, at a local school, it drops off before even reaching the end of the field, which is annoying and difficult as it will continue to fly in the direction it was before losing signal. Also, I am a high school student, and currently can't afford an expensive, super-high-quality quad right now.

Yeah, just curious; how much did this cost? If you want something cheap that will do your needs until you get enough money to buy a better Tx a Hobbyking HKTR6a would be a full range system (~300m). I am not sure your quad will support it though. Does it have a detachable receiver?

I got it as a Christmas gift, but I believe it was only about $100. I am not sure if it is detachable, I don't think so as it is called an all in one board (http://www.amazon.com/UDI-RC-U829-1...pebp=1433469642198&perid=0BWHMZ4W1WMFK21KDRZ8), but I can check this weekend.

Just do the antenna hack. It's fairly easy if you can solder.

How long is the tip of the antenna? The smaller piece on top of the black sheathing (that's the only part that counts.)

The pictures I uploaded are of my transmitter. I am not sure how long it is, but it says it is 2.4 gHz if that is why you are asking. However, I can check tomorrow and get back to you.
