Toy Quad Builder
Hi guys..new here to the forum and, just wanted to show you all my first ever quad...Instead of buying a complete quad and, accepting the pros and, cons that come with one model, i decided to piece together one myself using the best attributes from a number of models to create one.
Having been new to quads, i didnt see it a wise thing to invest a larger sum of money into something that i wasn't sure if i would keep interest in or not so, i decided to take a fun low cost route and, im happy i did so, here it goes...ill be using thumbnails as the pics so just click for a larger image.
I chose the Vitality H36 frame... Having done alot of research, it seemed to be the lightest frame in its class at the time so, thats what was chosen.
Next up were motors...of most all the models i researched and watched youtube videos on , i was after one with some speed so ,the easy choice for me at the time was the UDI U816 motor and boom assemblies...These 720 motors packed a punch back then and, today are still considered in the top 3 best 720 motors they offered back then...Number one would be the syma x1 motors that were actually Chaoli motors.. second the Hubsan x4 motors..and 3rd the UDI 816 motor , it was a fair enough decision to go with the UDI motors as it came with 3mm x 3mm carbon booms which i also needed so, i killed 2 birds with one stone as the price was right.
Next i needed to decide on a FCB that had good stability and good yaw as well as provide good power to the motors but, most important ,one that would bind to the frysky protocol... The only radio i had was the controller that came with my WL Toys V911 copter ..The decision was a simple one with the Vitality H36 FCB based on performance, price and, protocol compatibility...The top dog back then was the Walkera Ladybird... The hubsan x4 and, the Vitality H36 were the closest things to that model in terms of flight quality and performance....The ladybird V1 is still considered today the best of its kind offered back then.
So, now the decision for props was not an easy one...i wanted good lift but , also not at the expense of flight time or efficiency and , too much strain on the motor....Through some research and, some advice, i kept the prop size to 55mm and, selected the Mini Pet props...They provide wonderful lift and create very good speed for 720 direct drive motors.
Now all that was left was to choose a canopy and, some batteries..For batteries, i had heard many great things about the stock UDI U816 250mah batteries and, decided to use those, which im glad i did...they charge more like a higher capacity cell and last a good while, as well as provided very good punch..Im not sure of the C rating on these batteries but its enough to supply great performance....These are very good batteries and, if you can still find some today i highly recommend them.
To cut through some of the other bits and pieces, ill just move on ton showing the quad with the 2 canopys i chose for it...One was the MJX100 UFO canopy and, the other, the mini pet canopy.. (Walkera lady bird clone)..I painted the mini pet beetle canopy with a black sharpie as you can tell to give it a sort of stealthy type look.
The weight for this build turned out to be in the higher end range of 33 grams with the mini pet canopy and, it just tips the scales to register 34 grams with the MJX100 canopy...My scale is not a precision one used here so, the numbers arent precise weights but its close enough for now for me....Weights are with a battery installed, of course.
I plan to lighten this up a bit with trimming down to the bare essentials of the frame and, i have a set of picnicquads standard 7mm motor holders coming as well for it to replace the stock motor holders which weigh about 1 gram each...The picnic holders are advertised to weigh .20g each complete....so, this should drop a weight and, help lighten things up a bit.
I will post up more pics and changes in weights as i make progress...i know i have a smaller more precision scale someplace..just need to find it.
Thanks for looking and, i have a new project coming up ill be sharing as well...It should be quite the little speed demon for less money than one might think.
