Hey Quad flyers, New guy here.

First of all thanks for this site. I've been reading and learning a lot. I have a Syma X5SW with a little Wifi Camera. It's been a great quad and I'm finally making flights without crashing. Ha! Ha! I can fly a little bit with the FPV however there is quite a lot of delay so I don't fully trust it.

I'm wondering what the next logical step up would be as I started looking at a new quad. Some of the issue is I'm interested in both speed/race style FPV and Stable video and photography. It appears that I might need to choice and invest in one or the other. I can see a time where I have both a Phantom and a racer.

Is there a good in between class of quads that can do both? I would like to learn to go fast flying FPV but other times hover and take decent video... any chance of finding both in one quad?

My next step up I'm willing to go into the $200 range but I'm interested in researching up to about $400 if there is a significant difference. Or is that too bi of a jump.

Any help or guidance is welcome.

That is a lot cheaper... I see Banggood mentioned a lot here. You guys obviously trust the site?
Is this too much for a second Quad? I don't mind breaking it as I understand I need to push it to get better at flying. I'm just wondering it it's a huge leap from my Syma X5SW.

I have lots of dumb questions if you don't mind. Here's just a few....
Camera differences- so those other options I mentioned, are they really FPV? What do I look for when looking for refresh speed/rate or whatever so that I can actually fly FPV and not crash into anything?
The Eachine is 1000TVL
The MJX is 720P
The Syma is 8MP

As you can see I don't know much about cameras either. I need to figure out the difference between resolution and speed of video. :)

What are the FPV options and is there a way to make my Syma wifi better/faster for better FPV? Is that Quad not worth trying to invest in it?

I'm a total noob and don't know anything other than I'm hooked on quads.

I would suggest a larger Syma X8C and go with a real fpv system...you can get a true FPV system including monitor for around $100-$120.00 that will out perform any wifi fpv or toy camera.

The syma x5s models unfortunately have issues with the control boards and despite having the wifi fpv function which isnt really all that great or reliable , the x5s models have flight performance problems in that they dont fly very well at all in any sort of wind..The programming is lackluster to say the least compared to the x5c models.

Swapping the X5S board for the X5C board and using the Syma 5.8g fpv kit for $51.00 is a much better alternative to the x5s models...Considering the cost however ,you can use that towards something much better like above.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the ideas and good info. As I said , I'm new to quads and the X5SW is my first quad. Can you tell me a bit more about the X5S issues like why I need to switch the board to a X5C... I haven't noticed an issue yet... or maybe I just don't know the difference because its my first and only quad. I have been flying in the wind and it does blow around a lot. I just adjusted the forward accel trim switch way forward so I could turn and fight the wind coming back.

I found the Syma 5.8g fpv kit on Banggood. com. What's the difference between the Syma system and a "true fpv system"? I'm reading and looking at sites to understand more about fpv. Are you talking about putting together a component kit on my own for $100-120 or is there a better kit already to go for that price range?

Again, sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, just trying to learn as much as I can.

What is the difference between Syma X8, X8c, X8G? I think I figured out that X8w is with a wifi camera.

I went with the Eachine 250. Jackson, nice find for me. Thanks! I was able to get extra arms, props, prop nuts, extra batteries and the quad for $343.00! Thanks! I couldn't help myself. Watching vids and listening to the sound.... I started drooling. I want to get my hands on one and start learning real fpv. :)

Meanwhile I've been messing with the x5SW playing with tri props, motors and 1100mAh batteries. It's windy today so I'm flying low. I'd still like to learn more about the X5C board... so Mike please share whenever you get the time.

The problem with the X5S boards is the programming...they didnt program in enough pitch to fight any wind...Its not uncommon for the quad to be pushed backwards even in very little winds...The X5C boards have a far more aggressive pitch compared to the x5s.

I would have to confirm if you could still use the x5s controller or not with the x5c-1 flight board.

What i do like about the x5s is the body, which more favors the x8c in design.

About the different x8 models...the G model uses a much better camera.

Syma is coming out with a new x8 model which has altitude hold...its basically the x8g with this added feature...I cant confirm how well it will work but at $150.00 for it, i can wait for reviews..lol

I would be weary of using such a big battery...those motors wont last very long..The x5 models are already pushed to its weight carrying capacity limits with the stock sized batteries...the weight of an 1100mah would be bad news.

I cranked the forward trim button all the way so I barely have reverse. I found that I'm able to fight the wind. Keep in mind I'm a newbie basicaly fiddling arond with the controller :) so I really have no idea the type of performance I can get from a X5C board compared to what I have with the X5S..... Ignorance can be bliss. I'd be intersted in finding out.

That X8 model sounds intersting, I will be looking out for it.

As far as the 1100mAh batteries.... I can believe it. the quad is working hard to haul itself around. Luckly, I'm in MN where motors have the benefit of frigid temps to keep cool. I can see what you mean in that the motors are working hard and would heat up in warmer weather. Honestly, I haven't noticed a difference with the bigger battery, but its been windy since I got it so all I've really flown is on windy days fighting the wind. I have an extra set of motors on hand and the originals sound like they are seeing their last days. I tried 3 blade props. Seems like faster elevation but the quad seems less stable and dips on turns. It's been good for my hand/eye coordination though.

Besides the board change, do you have any recommendations on better motors (I've seen ones with brass gears) and better props or anything else I can do to upgrade?
