Newbie advice please

I've just found about quadcopters and they look so much fun. I want to buy one for my husband (so I can play with it) but I'm do confused. I cant afford a large on right now so was looking at the Hubsan but there are so many Mini micro nano etc with and without cameras I know its got to have gryo assistanct from reviews. He's had a small helicopter once before and flew it ok ish till it broke. Could someone who has used them advise me the best to get for a first timer £40-£50. I love the idea of a camera but some reviews say the the camera option in the Hubsan is let down by waterproofing. Is it worth paying extra for the camera on the Hybsan? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I definately want to get one but not sure what one to go for. Then if we like this one I'd like to go for a larger one as per your forums. Hi Karen ,sorry taken a while to get back to you, the hubsan quad is a micro the first x4 is cheap right now as it was the first , it is good to learn on will fly inside and outside in expert mode, they are about £27 upwards, the next is the hubsan x4 led this has lights for night flights £50 also there is the camera one so with this one you can film your flight and play back on a pc, none are water proof, i would not fly any rc in the rain , now the bad boy the hubsan FPV ( First Person View) this has a monitor on the transmitter so you can see in real time your flight and record £150 it is still small , i would go for the first x4, i still have one just get a pack of spare blades , Now if you want to really get into this hobby then just use the hubsan quad as a learning tool then more up to a bigger quad then you can do acro flying or fpv but now your looking at a few more pounds a 450 quad that will carry a camera £200 good transmitter £100 go pro camera £200 but your get a very good quad for that price i will put 2 links on to show you a good fpv setup and what a acro quad can do , if i can help any more just ask away ( e bay is the best place to get one right now ) kind regards neil

Thanks for getting back to me Neil that's really interesting. It wasnt the rain so much i was worried about but more landing on damp ground but I guess its better to avoid that too. I've attached a link for an X4 with a camera that is £49 is this the second model? Would you still recommend the first at £27 rather than the one with camera at £49 that I've attached. I'm guessing that V2 is the older model you mention and Version 3 is the latter with camera and led, right? Cant work out what version the first quad is though!!

Am I right to say that its the manovorability that a quod has over a helicopter is the biggest part of the fun? We have a helicopter that was great fun but it broke and havent been able to get it fixed up to now.

I cant wait to play with it myself and really fancy buying a proper one after Christmas. I would want to buy one all included with the transmitter ready to fly so what would you suggest & where from, I suppose its all down to money. Is there any chance you could give me a link so I could have a look at it. Thanks for responding to my question :)
 
The quad flys like a cp heli , you probably had a coaxle heli which has too sets of blades one set top one set bottom, or a fp set at 45Deg they are the normal starter helis they will hover them selves, a collective pitch heli is the most hardest to fly normally takes about 6 to 8 months to learn to hover it as hard as flying the real thing , well a quad flys like this, its not as hard and is more forgiven, but the quad will teach you balance and that is the art of flying a cp heli or a bigger quad
The quad you are looking at is a toy ( i am not being rude to you ) it will flip side ways do loops but it will not fly like a acro quad but that takes time to learn , the toy quad will teach you flying,
balance and is loads of fun ( i still fly mine )
Once you master this then i hope you have been bitten by the bug and now want a real quad then the real fun starts a fast quad will do 32 mph easy and fly so high you cant see it any more thats why they use FPV on them , you can go advanced as you want with GPS , height hold , return home , FPV with ground station so you go fly about a mile from where you are , or program the quad to fly to way points and then come back home after
We all need to start at the start if you get the hubsan quad x4 your be flying in a day then after that your need to learn to fly with out a crash that can take weeks months , once you can fly in all directions no crashes or just a minor one or two your ready for the step up
one thing i will say and this goes for the hubsan , ladybird,etc fit small rubber feet to bottom of landing legs if you have hard floors hard landing will knock the motors in time , hubsan x4 does feet to fit it and are cheap

Part 2 lol after x mas look at the mqx and a dx6i the mqx is bigger than the x4 but is still not big but is loads of fun and a fast little quad if your good at flying then we a build one or get a bind and fly
when you get in to real quads they start at a micro about 10 inch + then 330mm, 450mm ,900mm, tri-copter dead cat framed there are loads to look at and a cheap frame is £17 a nice carbon acro frame is about £130 that is just the frame a 450 quad (450mm motor to motor) bind and fly will be about £150, mine in the pic was about £250

That's great thanks. I'll probably come back for more advice in January when I get nearer to buying a full quad. Cant wait till Christmas so I can try one out. Always good to buy a pressie that you would like yourself lol :)
 
Hi neil, Just wanted to let you know we both love the quadcopter its so much fun. The only problem is I dont have my own lol ;) We havent had the opportunity to take it outside yet but just indoors is fun already. We want to buy more batteries now though as we dont like waiting half hour for it to charge lol.

I showed him all the videos and research I had done prior to Christmas and we are both now looking at possibly getting a full size one. Hope you had a good Christmas and had what you wanted from Santa. I'll be back in touch soon when I know how much we are going to spend for more advice. Thanks again Karen :)
 
Hi Karen , glad it went well for you both i use bang good. com for spares they are the cheapest but does not ship very fast so may be look local or e bay for batteries i get packs of 8 from bang good , to fly it outside you have to put it in expert mode , get some spare blades too as they some times come off and are very hard to find in the grass
 
Hi Neil, Thanks for the site for spare parts we've already ordered some but I think we'll need to order more. I'd like to see some quadcopters before I buy one so I've been looking for clubs but all I can find is the BMFA which seems to be helicopters. I'm wondering if they will be openminded about quadcopters as the model shop we visited were slating them. Do you have any advice of where we could find like minded people to get some advice in person. I've searched on the interenet but cant find anything. I live in South Wales by the way near Cardiff.
 
HI Karen , thats a hard one i dont know any near you , i dont know why they dont like quads , may be look for a plane club as there are a cross between a plane and a heli , any model shop that does horizon hobby helis will carry the nano qx, mqx, and the new 330 smart quad this may be a good one for you and your husband to look at its the easy to fly quad go onto horizon hobby uk site they will have videos of it flying and a list of dealers
