New To Drones

Hi there, new member here. I am by nmo means new to the forums concept, but definitely new to drones in general. Thanks to an unexpected bonus at work I am now the owner of a brand spanking new Halo Drone.

Why the Halo? No idea other than after hours of research looking at all possibilities from 1 to 1.5K price point, this was the one that I really came back time and time again. I was very tempted by going the go pro Karma route as I have a hero 5 that I use for offroad activities in my Jeep.

Still haven't had my very first flight, trying to figure everything out first before I go and crash it my first time out :) Anyways, great to know there is a community where I can read and learn. Really looking forward to seeing where this new hobby takes me.

You're going to get all sort of advice. Here's mine.

Buy yourself an inexpensive toy-grade quadcopter like a Syma X5C-1 and learn to fly it. It's fully manual and you'll develop the skills to fly. It's definitely something that takes practice and you "learn by crashing". You may want to develop your flight skills a bit before taking the Halo out so you don't bang that up too bad. Whatever toy-grade quad you choose, they're all going to be under $50 and would be money well spent. Plus then you'll have it for when you just want to fly around the yard or the park for fun.

Also, go to YouTube and enter "Drone Fail" in the search. Watch a few of those and see what can happen.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. Yeah I just had my maiden flight to all of 16 feet lol. I mean it wasn't rocket science, but it is definitely not intuitive to me. Great idea about the toy quad, great thing amazon has that buy it now feature that I abuse way too much :D

Welcome! I second the suggestion to buy and practice with a cheap, manual quad. I'm not too familiar with the Halo drones, but they look like they're getting good reviews. Nice to see another viable competitor to DJI.

Cheesy enough to make a quesadilla :) Actually one of the reasons I went for this one instead of the DJI Mavic Pro was the look. I like how it is kinda futuristic looking instead of pedestrian. I was almost hoping to go for the Karma since I do have a go pro, but I kept coming back to this one because I thought it looked hotter. So I guess Rick M is right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder/owner lol

Welcome to the group.
I think the Syma X5C-1 is a much better proposition for now.
I am as a new member with a toy and I am still learning. You clearly have the gear but for now we are on the learner slopes.

My suggestion is box up the flashy drone and learn on the Syma X5C-1, its said to be a great drone to modify once you can fly it. Then once you can fly and you understand how the drone and its components work, you can kick ass with the flash kit.

As I say genuine welcome. I look forward to reading you progress and to seeing some of you footage.

I am new to this forum so a big hello to everyone. This thread popped up when I was looking up info on the Halo Pro. Happy to see you bought a smaller toy grade quad to start. I purchased the Halo in Dec 2017. I am personally not a happy camper with this quad. It looks awesome and it definitely has some power to it but this is not a quad you want as a beginner or even intermediate quad pilot. Especially for the price tag.

Like yourself, I saw the postings on it and I wanted to purchase it before Xmas. So I did. From day 1 I had issues trying to lock in a gps signal. I would fly it very low because I really did not trust it.

I did a few tests here and there. Never able to lock on to 8 satellites or mods. Here is what happened the day I locked into more......

I took the halo up about 15 feet., then to 20. The quad then banked left and took off. I had zero control. About 10 seconds later I head it crash into the ground. It was pretty much totaled. I contacted Halo and they did in fact replace it. I used it once and have not touched it since.


As far as the reviews go, I think many of them are bogus. Look up any drone or quad and not one has that many positive reviews.

I own the Mavic Pro and Air. (Along with 7 toy grade quads). They fly like I wanted the halo to. Check out the review from pcmag on the halo. Is more accurate than most of the others. Thanks and good luck.

There are quite a few excellent Youtube reviewers out there who do honest, professional and comprehensive reviews, clearly spelling out the pros and cons. At places like Amazon those not marked 'Verified Purchase' should be ignored.

I don’t know what to believe on Amazon because I have reviewed products in there also. Ones that I have purchased. I have seen reviews on items that were not great in my opinion, but someone else thought it was the best thing ever. To each their own.

I am not saying the Halo drone is the worst one out there. For that price, I would take an Air or Mavic. That is probably why I was not happy with the overall performance . The Syma, Hubsan, Force1 etc can all give me a similar experience at quarter of the price Unfortunately, when I got into this hobby it was trial by fire.

The halo drone does have good follow and waypoint modes. The features that people seem to like the most, are the ones where there is minimal control of the quad. I rather the opposite. At least if I crash I know it’s my fault.
