Manufacturers and vendors are aware of the growing demand, but here's the thing. Right after tens of thousands of them get sold to non-pilots, the news will be filled with stories about stupid uses and injuries.
One thing we can do is be vigilant on the forums and boards we participate on for new members with new gear, and try to mentor them in safe learning practices and community friendly use!
The good news is a larger market is going to make more money available for development of better gear at lower prices. This will be tempered somewhat by the market leaning towards less advanced stuff for a while, as everyone vies for the gift price-point of probably less than $300.
