New, but want something fun [1st buy]

Hi all, decided to be a big kid and look at a quadcopter to take out on a nice day and have some fun with [I live in a town called Telford that has a huuuuuuge park , woods, grass area] After numerous youtubing / ebay browsing ive comes up with a list of quadcoptors that are well within my "cheap" budget but wanted any further help/ guidance, ideas on easy of use to then learning more, what the quadcopter can actually do, flight time/stability.

The first question that I have for you is; approximately what is your budget? If it can do about $250 (about 220 EUR) then I'd suggest getting a hobby grade.

Budget is literally that a budget copter....so £60.....just been browsing on Amazon for the first time and again SYMA seems the be the budge buyers / beginners company.

And after seeing numerous vdeos on youtube the XC=1 Seems to be value for money/ ease of use.

SYMA is usually what I suggest for buyers looking for toy grade price, but close to functionality of a hobby grade. The XC-1 and XC-5 are popular and are ok for their price.

Yes sorry i meant to S5SW.... and the S5C-1.....Seem to be able to get both around £40 and then £15 for 5 batteries...

Well it's FPV function is a bit of a gimmick, you won't be able to actually fly it in a strict FPV way. Good for setting up vid shots I guess. As far as recorded video check out this and note his comments:


Although clear enough I found the jerkiness caused by all the dropped frames unacceptable.

Now check out the regular Syma X5SC (no FPV) and it's stock camera that records on an SD card.


Pretty decent all things considered.

Thanks or that.....i will admit the FPV thing did catch my eye but seems more of a gimmick, and the camera quality seems worse on the X5SW....

Ah I see....I suppose GOV on a budget isn't going to be amazing......

I'm currently waiting to hear from a seller in a Syma X5a.c. (around £30) then I'll be buying either 5 x 500 batteries or 3 x 650 batteries or 1/2 750/ 10000 ones plus some spare motors and props.

Well after bidding on quite a few i managed to get a Syma XSW-1 with 5 x 650 batteries for £50 +£2 postage [was an auction the guy is a quadcopter fan and selling off his old / budget / non pro / kids copters......

My preference would be the Tarantula - check out YouTube for reviews - its get good reviews and its a nippy on if you want speed... but too much can burn out the motors.
This is a link to a Chinese store... they take around 21 - 30 days to deliver - but there are a few and their good point ( only one I see anyway ) is they have a wide range to choose from.

Another tip - prices vary from store to store so its worth looking around. Amazon.com USA??? From what I see... most of those selling quads are in China and delivery still take a long time.
Have you found any UK stockists? mm forgot that bit - you get the EU store for some of the Chinese stores..I have heard tales about getting stuff in 5 days. Well I am waiting for my order placed on 19/08/2015 which sent sent out from Sweden! If the trackers correct.. its sitting in a warehouse waiting to fly!

Passed through Telford a few times on my way From Manchester to South Wales via the Heads of the Valley pass!

Well just got my Syma X5SW-1 [i know the -1 is basically smaller packaging] Seems i have different types of batteries.....2 are branded Nano-Tech 750mAH, then a 500mAH and then 2 x 720mAH......Everythng seems to be working, and to be honest it looks well made....as a newbie i was expecting it to look flimsy.....is there an instructions manual that has better english, as the one supplied is rather difficult to understand?

Others may come back with better info..I have the Syma X8W - big brother to yours. One battery will have come with the quad on purchase - the other will likely be a a spare / extra battery - which you will find becomes needed if you want to play out for more than 15 - 20 minutes at a time. Manuals come as you see it! They are basically all the same bad translations.
I suggest you open youTube search "Syma X5SW-1" and you should get a multitude or reviews "Quadcopter 101" is a really good reviewer and a very experienced RC airplane and quad pilot. You will learn more watching YT reviews than anything else! My other post was perhaps premature - I anticipate you will get the bug and start looking at a different type of quad - if you are handy with a soldering iron ( or not you can learn fast) buying kits DIY picking your own mix of components. There is a rush on our "toy" quads to emulate the big boys and add GPS and lots of other good stuff... so there will also be a glut of "basic" quads which should come down in price eventually. If you can cope with waiting for delivery - China or your EU store for Chinese ( basically about all ) are usually the cheapest manufacturers. eBay sellers are a- again -0- mostly in China so.....Welcome to the addictive world of quad flying.....

I have a Syma XC5-1 and although it flies ok it has developed a loss of power after only about a minute even if I change the battery. I would look elsewhere rather than the XC5 model. It is very cheap and were I to do it over I would look at the Tarantula or other slightly upgraded units.

How long from purchase did it start to fail??

I get the impression you just "wrote it off" and have nothing to show for your money.... if that's correct.. why have you not contacted the seller with a complaint. I can attest that its not an easy path - depending on which seller - but obviously from what you report there is a fault in something. My first thoughts were a faulty charger and or battery. Whatever it is the kit is supposed to last longer than a few weeks.
If you have seen any of my posts about a quad I received - was was basically unflyable - I have been dealing with the seller to get a replacement or a refund. It seems to have paid off. Had I known how much the sellers hate giving refunds - I would have started with a paypal dispute. A lot of folk assume this is only an eBay/PP solution - it snot... any purchase with PP can be disputed with 180 days of transaction. A snag is you have to contact the seller first to advise the issue and give them a chance to resolve it - then if you hit a brick wall - you can use PP. The other issue is... you will be expected to send it back, and shipping to China from Australia would have cost me a minimum of AU$55 or around £28-£30 - which is dead money. The other problem is if they do not accept a fault... if you want it back - unless I am wrong - you also have to pay return shipping to yourself - but if its no good why bother. Chances are they will then repair it clean it and resell it! Which is what I think happened with the quad I got!!
