need some advice for a newbie

hi guys

my name is robert, i have started liking quadcopters now so thought i would join a forum to learn more about them.

i have been advised to get the hubsan x4 to help me practice but i keep looking at the cheerson cx-20 as i think that looks very nice!

the question is will the cheerson be too much to practice with or will it be ok?

The cx20 i believe is a much larger quad..It does share more of the hobby grade style components than a hubsan x4 does.

It boils down to your budget and budget for repairs when needed...The hubsan is a great little flier..many use the flight control board to make customs with and parts generally cheap for them.

The cheerson cx20 would be more stable in wind conditions and much easier to see at longer distances.

Its really down to budget and preference.

Both are considered good "toy" quads.

Welcome Froggy8. As Mike H. said the Cheerson CX20 is a great machine but....... Buy from a reputable dealer to make sure you get a "real" CX20. The market has been flooded with cheap Chinese copies that often don't work at all or fly poorly. Also look at some of the 180mm to 240mm offerings from Blade, Dromida, Helimax and others. Great size for indoor and outdoor flying. Get extra props and batteries for whatever model you decide on.

The Cheerson CX 30 ( I have one on the pretense its to amuse my 2 year old grandson!) is a small quad - ideal for indoors and outdoors there are a number of versions coming out of the online Chinese stores with or without camera. On avarge the cost is around us$75 - if you buy from China be prepared for an order to take 1- 7 or more to actually process to the point of - alleged shipping out. After that it can take 14 - 28 days before delivery. To be fair to these stores... shipping is mainly out of their control...its down to an international agreement where packaged are assembled at various waypoints around the world - where they wait till there is sufficient to meet the contract agreements of air cargo space.
Using eBay or Amazon is often no escape from the delivery times as most orders on both of these "outlets" are sourced in China/Hong Kong/Singapore.

Check this video. The guy is an absolute ACE at flying these mini / micro quads

The Cheerson Cx-20 is what is known as a "flying camera" its a stable machine - when its set up. But it is far more expensive and has been replaced by the Cheerson CX-22

Just to recap on your question - re learning to fly. I have a Phantom P3 - which has GPS and all the gizmo's that will enable a sensible 5 year old to fly it!
The Cheerson CX-20 is a "clone" of the Phantom and there are many others. The difference being that the cheap copies do not include all the good stuff and although stable IF you know how to fly them manually - there is a learning curve to pass through if you have Zero experience at RC flying.
The Cheerson does have some of the good stuff, I don't remember everything but it has a "hold position" facility that keeps in hover, a "Return to Home" button. You would need to get online do a search and read the spec sheets, but its not pure manual like the cheapo's

It will be easier to practice with because of the built in GPS etc,. Basically you need to decide which part of the great hobby of quad flying - you want to get involved with. Buying the stuff out of China and wizzing up and down a field or buying or building a racing kit - or any other size of frame kit - (look above and see the banner for frames!) which if mastered is probably the best thing in virtual reality flying at warp speed! Or - do you want a flying camera to go making great Arial panoramas and video? The Cheerson can do both to a certain extent, you can fly it slow in a Photo session or it will wiz about as much as you want it to.

My suggestion: to get great info on learning how to fly, visit youTube - search for "quadcopter101" and get on his channel. He has a truck load of promo videos to demo all the different model.. but he also has his blog which gives you all the information on how to fly quads and has video demonstrations to go with the blog!
Dont just stay with him... there are are others - Alishanmao a search on YT will find him - some don't like him and he is a "bit upfront" but he is also a brilliant quad and fixed wing flyer and builds all kind of customized pro stuff.

The hubsan is a fine quad...so good in fact ,alot of companies made clones of it...I think you will like it..Im more into building my own quads with different parts and pieces and the hubsan x4 flight control board is something i will be using in a build at some point.

Let us know how you like it and, share some pics with us when you get it.

There are some differences now with the hubsan models...They have 4 different ones..The 107H..107C and 107 D and 107L.....the 107C and 107D use a larger 8.5mm motor and use alot of power to carry the fpv equipment..The H and L model uses smaller 7mm motors and are more efficient meaning longer run times...not to mention less costly...I think those only carried a video camera and not fpv.

So if you want fpv, dont expect long run times with it..You can get upgrade batteries with a larger capacity if needed to add about 1 minute of flight time.

No apologies necessary! Congratulations! Looks like you got a bunch of extra stuff with it. Let us know what you think after a few flights. I have had mine a couple months now and it's been great.So stable I haven't even broken a prop! Certainly good value for the money. Enjoy!!

Ditto.... no apologies needed.... just take your time... read the manual 3 times! It it has an altitude holding facility... use it! Dont go high for your first few flights!
The delivery was fast!! 2 days?? Can I ask where you purchased - seems better than 3 weeks from China!

One more thing. The stability functions are dependent on getting a good GPS lock. Altitude hold does fine without although the quad can drift. Depending on where you are flying this can take from 2 to 5 minutes. You can just let it sit if you want while you wait for the lock. The drain on the battery will be minimal. Pick a grassy area and use the prop guards in the beginning.

If it is a "real" CX20 then no. Just follow the manual and all should be well. Read thru the manual a couple times to give you a feel for it then follow the instructions and everything will be fine. If it is a copy then things can get complicated. Some of the members have found solutions to many of the problems on the fake CX20's so don't worry. Keep us posted.

Im jealous...lol....If you find it difficult to fly and still want to learn, its very cheap to get something to practice with..Im buying quadcopters in the 20 to 30 dollar range and having a blast with those..It can teach you the basics with sick movement and you hand eye coordination then make the transition alot smoother when youre ready to fly the more hobby grade quads
