Need help on Experimental Quadrotor

I really want to build one of these;--- http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/...-2013-should-quadrotors-all-look-like-this--- I am excited enough that I will cannibalize my other builds/repairs to make it happen. I do mechanical pretty well. I don't understand programming for FCB's, or even transmitters. I'm kinda hopeless there. That is where I'm hoping you guys can help. Another area is trying to compute the size and pitch of the main rotor for a given frame size. Please give me any ideas you have. I need help picking a FCB that can be programmed properly. I need help finding, or building, the main rotor and the power system for it. Any advice at all will be appreciated. I have 2216, 2306,2312 and 3508 motors, a bunch of different ESC's, a Futaba 10ja Tx, a extra r3008sb Rx, a bunch of various building materials. props etc. My main concerns are getting the right FCB and main rotor parts. Please help.:) Thanks!!

click on "prototype testing" to get to the link at the top of the page. Now I know why no one answers my questions that include different links. I'll get one of my kids to show me next time they stop by.

Yep. Saw that. I think it has merit and would be a blast to build. I know it was done strictly as a research experiment just to prove a theory. I still want to do it.

As will I. First I have to figure out how to program it. I think I can do the rest. I also need to learn how to download pictures for a build log..... Tough bein' a geezer. o_O My kids call me a "COB".( Crusty Old Biker )

Nice!! I have GOT to figure out my new phone! I have some pictures from in front of the bar in Madrid, NM where they filmed the fight in Wild Hogs. I'll figure it out. Keep the rubber side down.:cool:

Just one more question among many. I think I could solve that by making the wheelbase larger than the big prop. The more I research this the less it seems to be very practical. The small amount of info I have gathered is not very encouraging. I'm beginning to believe that the answer to the initial question of; "Have we been designing Quadrotors wrong" is no, we haven't. Although this large rotor design shows more lifting efficiency it isn't as fast or agile as a standard quadcopter. I'll keep searching for more information.

Haha, out of the PM and into the "real world" I see. :p I think it has merit for larger camera quads, but I have not had a chance to prototype a (similar design, just like that but with two middle props to make yaw simpler and four smaller ones.) Check your inbox on that PDF I sent you, it can be done with main stream flight controllers just gotta do a little math.

Ha! I thought you sent that to me by accident. I forwarded it to the guy who was having controller problems. I see your "out" as well. I didn't know if your project was secret or not.:) I like stuff that's different so I haven't given up yet. I have one idea that would be more like a "pentarotor". Here's a thought; are we just trying to reinvent the wheel/helicopter? LOL

Well it would probably be simpler to have a big prop and a smaller tail rotor, but at least this is a mutirotor xD.

Thanks! That's interesting. Holtneil and I had a discussion along those lines a couple of days ago. The math completely loses me though. After reading the paragraph about how the larger cross section would affect horizontal flight and wind stability I doubt this will ever see mass production in quadrotors. Still, for camera platforms or setting endurance records it has definite possibilities.

I believe that the best endurance records will be attributed to hydrogen cells.
