Transmitter modes are the setups for which stick controls what movement on the aircraft. Mode 2 is by far the most commonly used in the USA. In mode 2, the throttle and yaw (rudder) are on the left stick, the pitch and roll are on the right stick (elevator/ailerons). Mode 1 transmitters put throttle on the right stick, and I think roll (aileron) but not positive. There are also Modes 3 and 4, which mix the controls up differently. Mode 3 is a precise reversal of Mode 2, and Mode 4 is a precise reversal of Mode 1.
If you want confusion and disaster, try flying in a different mode than the one you are familiar with. As usual, don't ask me how I know!

pdmike: I think you are referring to the rate settings. If so, this is a measure of how fast the (for sure) pitch and roll response and (possibly) the yaw response will be. The result is that a higher setting will result in the quad being faster and more responsive. This is a more adjustable version of the Low/High or Low/Medium/High rate switch that some quads have.
Jackson: AMEN. I almost mentioned that Syma has it all wrong on their transmitters, but I figured that post was confusing enough as-is.
For Syma quads, Syma's "Mode 1" is really Mode 2, and Syma's "Mode 2" is really Mode 4.

The problems this has caused folks easily covers hundreds, if not thousands, of posts. That they have failed to correct it after all these years is baffling. I especially feel bad for the folks getting a Mode 1 hobby grade TX cuz that's what Syma said they were using.

I was out of RC for a lot of years, but I used to fly gliders and heli's. When I first tried a Syma quad to see what all the multirotor fuss was about, I of course set the TX to 'Mode 2'. That didn't last long - I couldn't get it back on the ground fast enough. Did some reading, and figured out they had the nomenclature screwed up, but that was a short first flight....
