Looking for new tx/rx?

Hi,
Newbe question here. I have been viewing the Turnigy 9x-pro transmitter but want to be sure I understand what I am reading in the description. It says that no "modules" are included (or receiver) - I assume this will be an additional purchase? They describe a couple of options for this but not in enough depth that I can understand it - a lot has changed from my old 72mhz controllers used for planes and gliders in the olden days... What exactly will I need to acquire, and if you can think of other comparable (or better) transmitters - please let me know? I am currently printing up a copy of the DJI Inspire and need additional channels that the cheap Turnigy 5X does not have. It is fine for my trainer SK450, but I would like to replace once with a quality unit and never have to regret. I am sure this build will lead me to a lot of questions about the multiwii and APM controllers as well as I want full featured control for this quad.
Any input is greatly appreciated - I have not really connected with anyone locally and this is quite different from my previous modeling experiences.

Thanks - the videos cleared up a lot for me. As I search around - I see a lot of recommendations for the FRSky Tarranis and it looks like a good unit too. Are the Turnigy 9x pro model and the Tarranis about equal units - same range and features? Also, I was looking at the FRSky FS-i10 receiver with telemetry (Again turnigy has a similar model). These do not list quads though - only Planes, Gilders, and Heli's. Is there a reason for this - these look like great transmitters that have a lot of control features. Are these in use for quads at all? Is the range good, etc? So many options out there - the transmitters have improved an incredible amount sine my past flying gliders on 72hz tx with none of these features. Any feedback is welcome as I am trying to soak it all in and make a good decision for future models. My plans include FPV, additional video cam on gimbal, and full GPS features and there is so much to learn and take into consideration. Thanks!

I wanted to follow up on this. Due to HK having the 9X Pro on sale under $50usd - I will be receiving one shortly. I need to decide on which module will be best for my needs. I don't have a big investment in receivers at present - just a couple of Turnigy ones that match my 5x transmitter - no great loss if I cant use them. I plan for mostly quads at present and am acquiring parts for FPV and will have a gimbal and camera to record in the future. At this point - I am open to any info I can gather - directions to information on the web, videos, etc. I have no experience with modern controllers like this and would prefer to spend my money only once. Maybe twice or thrice but never 4x.....

Your input is appreciated!

Yes I did. I have been looking at a bunch of others just searching on utube as well. Mainly - I am looking for feedback on what has good range/best range and readily available receivers - also with good range. I could just pick something but I am not in a hurry - my trainer is still working and I am still training - not ready for FPV quite yet. I have started gathering parts for that as I am looking forward to that experience very much. I am currently looking the frsky XJT series tx/rx as they are getting good reviews for function and range. I have planes in my history going back to control line as a kid in the 70's so this tx will probably see use there at some point as well. It is just that all my history does not extend past 72mhz and the tx I had in the past had none of the setting features available - these look really useful to me. I am also a mechanical engineer and a bit of a gearhead so I like a challenge and learning new stuff....

You should note that flight controllers these days have many of these same settings available in their software, throttle curves, stick scaling, expos etc.

I only have experience with the kk board so far. I knew about stick scaling but I don't think I saw a throttle curve in there. I am looking at the apm family for a project I am building. That system is more full featered and may have throttle curves? So much to learn....
