Jerky Video Scene Transition

So I get my quad up there, hovering in a spot, and slowly rotate it to take a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding terrain. I get the video into my computer to look at it, and the quality of the picture is perfect, but as the view turns, there is no smooth transition. Rather, it will pause and then jerk to the next view and so on. It is not caused by wind - it has to do with the camera/video itself.

I'm pretty sure there is a setting or two that I can apply to correct this but I don't know what those might be and would appreciate any suggestions.

Are you reading the video from the memory card?

My videos do that from the card. So I copy the video to my computer and they are perfect. Not sure if that is your problem or not.

My 8 core 64 bit computer does videos very well from the hard drive.

I take the little card out of the quad, put it into a card reader and access it with Windows Explorer. It plays in Windows Media Player. I have a 64 bit computer. When I view the video in this fashion, the scene transition is jerky. I'll try copying the video from the card onto the computer and then viewing it. Thanks!

I don't know - it's the little card I pull out of the quad when I want to see what I've done. I think it's 16GB. Do you mean what brand the card is? What difference does that make? It's the card that came with the quad. BTW - what does "SD" stand for?

Actually SD cards are rated for performance, speed and other parameters. Some are specifically for video. I have never had an issue with using a Name Brand card. Go to amazon and you will get a feel for the different specs and such.

But your mileage may vary. ;)

I found a YouTube video on this topic. If you really want to do a job, you put the video onto the hard drive of your computer and then you decompress it, using special software designed to do that. It has something to do with changing the codec settings of the video. Pretty high tech stuff for a guy like me. I did download the software and I am going to give it a shot but, first, I want to see what happens when I simply put the video onto my hard drive and view it from there. If that works, game over. If it's still jerky, then I guess I will go the more complicated route.

I'd just get a decent card. Any Class 10, UHS-1 with 90 MS/s write speed should give you excellent 4K HD video

Are you shooting in 4K?

As RENOV8R & ArmyVet mentioned, the write speed of the memory card is important especially w/ 4K. I use a SanDisk Extreme Pro with up to 90 MB/s write speed.

You can also try setting your recording to a lower resolution, like 2K or even 1080.

The open-source slowmoVideo package has also been recommended for smoothing jerky video. It “uses a sophisticated interpolation method to synthesize smoothly-changing frames between jerky source frames and the result is significantly better than with Shotcut that merely drops frames”.

Thank you. I am using the card that came with the Phantom 4 quad. It doesn't look like a quality card - I can't even see a name on it. I will pick up what you recommend for flight this coming weekend.

I transferred several videos from the quad card onto my computer's hard disk. Not quite as jerky, but still way too jerky for my taste. Also, I recorded a relatively long video, about 10 solid minutes. I note that sucker takes up over 2 GIGS on my hard drive. WTF? And that's compressed. What happens if I decompress it?

My 1st was a jerky video of our neighborhood that I wanted to share with my distant offspring. I uploaded to YouTube & it magically became smooth. I don't know how they did it, but it sure made me look talented.

Since then I've changed the card, resolution & editing software to improve it quite a bit, but I'm still at the bottom of the video learning curve. I could only respond to your question because I'd just researched the same problem.

Oh yes, I mean it all about the muscle memory old chap. Are you sure it's not a spot of jello. Maybe try taking the camera orf the drone & film somthing else to see if it persists. If not it's obviously a vibrational issue.
