Hi everyone. I’m new to the forum, Quadcopters and FPV and just today have received my first set of goggles to get me on my way (with a Quad on the way for Christmas).
Now my question is around Lipo storage where it’s built into my goggles (EV800D). If I was to put these goggles away for a month (or longer in offseason) am I best to leave them 50% charged / drained by using the onscreen battery level as a guide? I know I can’t leave it fully charged for a long period of time and generally of the dangers of Lipo batteries for the quads themselves.
I’ve searched around for an answer on this but mostly leads me to generally storing them when you have the entire battery in your hands and not in a device like this one.
I have heard these goggles aren’t the best battery wise so want to keep things as healthy as I can from day 1.
Hiya welcome to the hobby/forum. Agree with @holtneil regarding a way to determine safe voltage just need to know the number of cells which is pretty easy to work out if you can see the voltage in goggles. Also modding things is pretty big in this hobby and getting in there to see what battery they put in and eventually replacing it is an option if the goggles last you so long that the internal battery dies or becomes an issue. Personally use a 5Ah 2S that I just throw in a pocket and have a long lead for to power my goggles but started off with box goggles with baked in battery and was good enough to get out to the park and fly a battery or two (usually lasted a couple of days of learning to fly before needing recharge)... Once you're to the point you want to spend a day out or something you'll want some kind of external battery so can swap things and bring extras or do like I do and have a big battery in the pocket (and a backup).
Thank you to you both for the replies and advice, very useful to know all of that.
What you mentioned there about getting box goggles with the baked in battery is my current situation and that was more my question really....without a current battery/voltage usage as part of my osd (just a 4 bar battery meter in top right corner of display) is it recommended to open the goggles up before storage and get the Lipo on a battery tester or is it safe enough to deplete to about halfway on the meter with the battery left inside then leave it off for a few months?
I know if I had the 2s Lipo in my hands I could be very specific about getting it to a storage charge but with it being baked/built into the box goggle I was wondering if halfway depleted or nearly depleted was the way to go?
Hi if its a 2 cell 7.4 volt store charge would be 3.2 x2 = 6.4 so half charge of 7.4 would be 3.2 approx but it will be under so it may trash the battery
May be do what wafflejock does with a separate battery so remove the built in one solder a plug and fit and external battery
Yah would also say getting down to exactly half isn't too important so long as not fully charged and then stored you'll still be doing the battery and yourself a favor by getting it nearer to 50% or a bit less, really just damaging to the cells to fully charge and then leave on a shelf for extended periods of time.
