how many channels do I really need?

How many channels do I need to be able to fly.. also.. Anything. I start witg a quad copter.. which isnt even finished entirely.. but when I want ti fly something else farther diverse in the hobby. please give me examples?

Hobby king sells really cheap 6ch radios and recievers. From what I've read they look and feel cheap, but for 30 some bucks apparently they perform pretty good

Yeah, I have their HKTR6a v2 pair. They look and feel cheap, but I have not had any problems, and have ~300m(meters, so around 900'-1000') range.
