how dangerous is it to fly over water?

i live in MN and the hills and lakes here are just too gorgeous to not FPV over!!

I guess the obvious risk is crashing in the water and losing your quad....but the way i see it: when you are flying over water, there aren't any trees or anything you can really hit, so as long as you keep a good height above the water, you should be fine right?

I've never really just spontaneously crashed, except the first few weeks of flying when i didn't know a good way to strap the battery down, but now i should be able to fly over water with no problem right?

btw my parts should come tuesday! so basically my banggood order from china took 14 business days instead of 12, not bad at all!!

Nice thing is radio reception is excellent. It's important to have OSD so you know the status of your battery level and RSSI so you know your signal strength.

You can soak/spray corrosionX onto the motors, FC, Tx and just about everything. will waterproof it pretty much. There is a u-tube video about it, look it up. The guy doing it lands a heli into a tank of water and flies it out again after it sinks to the bottom. pretty cool.

Yeah I've seen that video - I'm a huge fan of corrosion X! It would be cool if i crashed in the water and was able to just fly back up again! otherwise trying to get a boat and fishing the quad out may be a problem! I'll just stay a good height up and not crash!

It would not be the electronics that would be ruined. Most solid-state circuit boards can be run through a dishwasher (and many are). Plastics would also be a candidate for soap and water, along with wiring and everything else.

Motors might not come back, but even then with a good flush with electronics cleaner, and then blown out and left to dry thoroughly, I can't think of any reason a motor wouldn't survive also.

Actually, it's not dangerous at all. I routinely fly over local ponds............haven't drowned yet.........

I fly over water often ... Just make sure you don't go too far out and you're battery is good ... Like RENOV8R said, it's best if you have RSSI and battery monitoring displayed so you stay safe

It is more of a psychological thing than anything else. I have flown over water with no problems. You simply need to make sure that you have thoroughly preflighted your aircraft, you have an adequate charge for the intended flight.
