Dear George,
Thank you for contacting me in support of Amendment #3596 to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Authorization Act of 2016 (H.R. 636).I appreciate you taking the time to contact me.
Amendment #3596 was introduced with the goal of improving provisions in H.R. 636 applicable to model aircraft. However, this amendment did not come up for a vote.
I share your concern about the regulation of model aircraft. For thousands of people in Ohio and across America, model aviation is an educational hobby that enables adults and children to experience and enjoy the wonders of flight.
As you may know, H.R. 636 preserved the Special Rule for Model Aircraft that was included in the FAA Reauthorization and Modernization Act of 2012.FAA's interpretation clarified that aircraft must satisfy certain criteria to qualify as model aircraft and to be exempt from future FAA rulemaking action. The complete parameters of model aircraft operation can be found in Section 336
here.
On April 20, 2016, H.R. 636 passed the United States Senate by a vote of 95-3.I was pleased to support this legislation which funds the FAA through fiscal year 2017.This legislation is passenger friendly, improves aviation safety and security, advances drone technology and reduces waste.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact my office on this important issue. For more information you can visit my website at
