If it ain't broke, don't fix it??? You kidding?
Well have done several short test flights so far. Everything was looking good until I did a stress test......basically some highspeed turns, stops etc. Two of my prop nuts(the CCW motors) came off, so did an unexpected crash test. So far after checking everything out looks to be ok. I got my props back but losts my nuts. So waiting for a couple of sets of nuts to get here. Also have ordered locking nuts to replace those pretty black and chrome pointy nuts. Weather has shut down flying so good time to checking out Mission Planner.........it has a simulation section. Just worked thru my first full mission and am really liking this thing. Have also been going thru tutorials from several different sources and have discovered that as with any software in the last 30 years once you understand the built in "shorthand" it can be as simple or as complex as you wish. I've also decided I really like the APM Flight Controller/Mission Planner combo. It's what I will be using on future builds...........next being an X8 conversion to brushless, but that's down the road a bit. Still got a lot to learn with Frankendrone.
Things I've learned. 1. Stay away from proprietary components. In particular it's my dji clone 2212 motors. The 8mm shaft isn't a serious problem but the flattened sides are. I gotta a set of CF 1047 props that I have to modify in order to use them. Not a big problem but an aggravation. 2. Watch out for anything you attach to your boards......specifically what kinda mounting system is used. The mount that came with the kit for the Compass/GPS module had a single bottom mounting bolt with a tiny lock nut. Not enough bearing surface to prevent cracking the board the first time I tried to liftoff and the S500 did it's turn and flip. As noted elsewhere, I've gotten a "t" shaped mounting bracket that mounts to the frame arm screws. Even after my crash test, no problems.
All in all, so far this quadcopter thing has been a wonderful experience and I love learning new stuff.
