hi

First off i have never even flown a quadcopter or anything else for that matter but i came across this instructable http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-an-H-Quadcopter-with-3D-printing/ and thought it would be fun to try it. ( i will be working on it with a few students of mine as a side project)

what i do know (kind of)
  1. i am a HS technology teacher and a coach for our HS FIRST robotics team
  2. therefore have some knowledge in motors, motor controllers, wiring and limited programming skills
  3. i have access to a 3d printer and have already printed all parts
what i need to know
  1. is this instructable legit? do the #’s seem right? are the components suggested correct?
  2. if so i would also like to add a camera and display..
any info/advice would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forums.

Two questions:

How much time can you afford to wait for parts, and what kind of budget do you have?

I was looking through the parts, first thing I see wrong is a four gang ESC, they are usually terrible in construction and won't last like single ESCs that have uBECs.

The transmitter can be anything on this link just about, you want mode 2, and no cheaper than the Hobby King $26 one.

I'd suggest getting everything from HobbyKing if your going to get anything from them, excluding maybe the battery, if you can get a battery from inside your country you can save a lot on shipping.

Here are some nice 900kv motors that can do 3S-4S (~12v - ~16v)

Here are some ESCs that will run these motors just fine. They are also pre-flashed with Simon K firmware, so that you don't have to.

thanks for the response

i know the controler is pricy total $300ish w/o camera and display.. i got more time than money. good to know on the motor controler individual is fine (any recommendations?) should i buy a cheep one to learn on?

one thing that may concern me is hole location for motors. holes are already there. i can drill more but.. or are they all the same?

Yeah, I suggest getting a cheap toy grade before crashing a more expensive one.

Here is a nice one for learning on, REALLY cheap.

Here is one that I have used, it flys great too. (fits in your hand)


Here is one that is on it's way for me to test, s o I should have a video later this month, or early in June. (the long arms make it look flimsy and not as durable, so I'd suggest one of the others above)
