first time flyer

hi all, I am new to the quadcopter seen and recently bought my self a cheap starter kit my first flight went well without any glitches.. but on my second flight things took a turn for the worst and my quadcopter turned into a boat finding the local cannel :( luckily it still works but I was just looking for any advice for a beginner.

I currently have a jjrc h12c with built in camera ( I'm looking at just shooting some good footage with my quadcopter not so much the tricky flying)

all advice will be welcomed

personally I'd keep away from water (and electric wires. and neighbors with Dobermans.)

my unit (Syma X5C) has a down-pointing camera and I have to take that into account. great for showing off the house. to get a horizon shot over the trees I find I can pitch back just as I take the pic. this lets the camera take a higher angle shot.
try to avoid shooting into the sun, you just get glare / lensflare.
nature shots? don't get too close to the trees. I like hovering in front of flowering plants.
my unit rotates. I like to hover in a fairly stable high place, turn on the camera, and slowly rotate. too quick and it can blur, especially close.

I think a lot depends on subject. I look forward to tree shots next month when the leaves start changing.
if you're really confident, fly over the water, shoot boats / shore as soon as you launch, and return before battery goes down. (mine doesn't give much warning when it gets low). of course watch the wind. generally, early morning or sunset the wind dies down.

thanks for the advice :) I took the video about 6:30am like you said there was no wind what so ever perfect flying conditions. unfortunately the water damage took its toll and now its gone to heaven... so I have ordered the next model up witch seams to have a better camera just waiting on mr post man to deliver, fingers crossed its soon :)

these things are too expensive to throw away but not expensive enough to be worth fixing.
I'm thinking about upgrading to a WL model with plug-in motors figuring it would be more fixable.

did the unit go bad or just the camera? maybe the camera Is replaceable?

here is sort of an example. the one pic (a buddy's neighbor) was taken at a normal angle, the second when I pitched back. can't see anything but trees but you can see (I think) how much further this angle gives the pic.

I do not want to sound destructive... but when your new X8W - which I assume you have on order - arrives, I suggest you do as one well known youTube "reviewer in China did.... took it off and tossed it over his head into the field! There are all manner of better - and not expensive cameras available - which can simply be velcro'ed in place. The Mobious being one and on eBay there are many better specked car key fob type camera's. I am also waiting the Storks - who, apparently are trained in China to fly orders to the local post service in Australia, who take over and when in the right mood will deliver my Syma X8W - to my doorstep! There are a load of vids on youTube dealing with this very issue and are worth taking time to check out.

The pictures look as if you have tried to sharpen them and perhaps add saturation to the colours - either that of its plain old camera shake. And Yes.. the supplied camera on my X8W - will be going in the odd bits drawer straight from the box!

Other than the camera failings - you seem to be on the right track for aerial photography.

BTW: a youTube reviewer has pulled the camera apart - literally - and states its actually the camera ( may have a modification) from the x5C, in a different casing.
