First flight- immediate crash... What did I do wrong???? (JJRC x12/Eachine EX4/C-Fly Faith)

I took my EX4 out to a deserted HS parking lot and did everything I thought I needed to do in pre-flight... BUT I HAVE TO BE MISSING SOMETHING, perhaps in startup routing, perhaps in calibration.

So I got it up in the air the first time... and within seconds the thing just ran away. It was supposed to be in GPS mode. It hovered ok. But as soon as I started to move it forward it took off, totally ran away where I couldn't control it *at all* and seconds later crashed.

I turned everything off, did everything again and this time I could fly as one would expect. It did everything it was supposed to do. And then I brought it in to change batteries. Turned it off. Changed the battery. Went through the startup routine again... It took off followed by another immediate run-away.

WHAT COULD I POSSIBLY BE DOING WRONG? It worked fine (only) one out of three times, So I know it could work and it's given me hope. But unfortunately, who ya gonna call "Drone Busters" to get real answers in real time????

Did you happen to get any log data? If it's in GPS mode, I'd bet some type of loss of signal. If it didn't work one time, I'd guess that you might have issues with how your controls from the receiver are mapped in the flight controller.

My gut is that I must have missed something in the initial calibration. I have to study what all the flashing lights mean. I literally received the drone this afternoon and poured through the manuals as I waited for the batteries to charge. It was late in the day and hard to see the lights with the sun coming down almost directly into my eyes.

I actually have the Eachines EX4, but I've printed out the manual manual for the JJRC x12 as I couldn't find the Eachine version. Perhaps a LARGE paper version might help. The instruction pamphlet was in 4 point type and very sketchy as well as Chinese to English translations often leave much to be desired.

Anything else you can think of? Does the GPS automatically calibrate? What does the gyro calibration do and how often to you need to do it?

Is there any way you can see how many timing signals that the GPS is seeing? It should just not take off or not enable GPS if it doesn't have a signal. A quick google search showed that the C-Fly app is supposed to have better stability than the Enjoy-fly app, so that might be your problem?

Hello there I have the same problem with my JJRC X12! Second flight, randomly came home, i got back off, flew into a tree on its own without me doing anything. No matter what I do after that, every time I try to fly it starts going one direction after a bit. I am sending it back to the seller. Maybe I will have to buy a different drone.
(It does pretty much what it did in the video, randomly started flying in a direction)
(Also, I was told by the seller to download the Enjoy Fly app, before I had the C fly app 1.3.7 or something (Ended with a 7) and it had no probmels flying first flight..)

I seem to have similar problem with my new Eachine EX4.
Flown it a couple of times without issue, but now as soon as I take off in GPS mode and hovering, It becomes more and more unsteady and if I don't counteracts using sticks on remote it will suddenly fly in one direction and come out of control until it crashes.
I use a Samsung A3 2017 running Android version 8.0 with C-fly app.
I always calibrate compass several times and avoid take off until i got at least 9 sats.
What to do ?

Actually, that is the gimbal problem I also have as well as many others who own this drone. The gimbal just looses connection if you turn the drone and the gimbal tries to compensate for yaw movement until it reaches its max and just craps out.

I am a drone beginner, but I know a little about electronics. I am going to suggest:

1) Make sure the drone is dead level when you switch it on, as its gyro may be self calibrating itself on its initial orientation.
(But this just a guess.)

2) Tether the drone by attaching a few meters of string to below its centre of gravity, so that loss of control won't result in loss of drone. Fly it this way until you diagnose the cause of the problem.

3) Is there a way to reset the trim calibration ?

Je semble avoir un problème similaire avec mon nouveau Eachine EX4.
Je l'ai volé plusieurs fois sans problème, mais maintenant, dès que je décolle en mode GPS et en vol stationnaire, il devient de plus en plus instable et si je ne contrecarre pas en utilisant des bâtons sur la télécommande, il volera soudainement dans une direction et sortira de contrôle jusqu'à ce qu'il s'écrase.

Aparently, thats one of the quirks with the X12. Some lucky people have purchased this quadcopter and it behaves perfectly. Others (including myself), not so much. I have tried other apps for this drone both IOS and Android with no success. I have this gut feeling that it is a quality control issue with C-Fly (the manufacturer). No luck in getting help from my purchaser or C-Fly. With a very little effort by C-Fly, this could be a nice little drone.

Hi I know this is going to sound strange but when you fly do you fly around yourself turning your body so you can see the quad if you don't stop this as this is what making the quad act up , I say this because when you start the set of the quad and it get GPS lock it also knows were the transmitter is ( this is all part of the return home mode )and the way it is facing , so if you fly behind you and you turn around the sticks on the transmitter change

Are you telling me that if the drone is in back of me that I should not turn to see the drone? Afraid I dont understand....sorry. Can you clarify that? Maybe i should never fly in a manner that lets the drone get in back of me. How does this apply in follow me, circle me and other modes?

What I am saying is a lot of drones with GPS and return home mode when you turn them on and setup they look for the transmitter position(and the way it's facing) and if you turn round they get confused , when I fly I always have the drone out front if I let the drone get behind me the control go backwards

The follow me mode and circle mode will be different in there setup to flying in GPS mode like the phantom it will circle you but will come close no matter how much stick input it's a safety feature in its set up
