You may also want to try out just spinning up the motors and controlling through the motors tab (props off to save your face) to narrow it in on being an issue just with the receiver or transmitter but it sounds like that's the problem.
Depending on the receiver protocol you can get a relatively cheap DSO oscilloscope that can capture the signal so you can see if it looks right for yourself but anything aside from simple PWM or PPM signals will be harder to just eyeball since digital encoded signals require decoding (I used a cheap one when working on a remote and receiver using PWM signalling to an ESC)
Also would dig into what dugdog posted sounds relevant.
