Drones for old Farmers?

my dad is older and wanting to check out the farm. Mom has had several strokes and needs supervision. that been said, when they get out of assisted living and visit the farm dad would like to look around the place. i need a recommendation... looking for ease of use, 1 mile range, fpv without goggles, and a little crash protection on RTH.

I have so far come up with the Parrot bebop and phantom 4. they are a bit into the expensive range. but have decent bang for the buck.

am i unrealistic in finding something under $1000 let alone $500?

i may not have money but I am tech savy and good with my hands and have the scars and low levels of blood in my lead to prove it... if there is a diy solution...

Welcome to the forum. you must think very highly of your dad. You may want to look at the Phantom 3 Pro. Well under $1000 now and has every thing you're looking for. 3 mile range, very easy to fly and a large enough screen for both of you to view. However if you're serious about this venture I'd suggest you get a cheap$50 quad right away and learn how to fly first. Contrary to popular belief, there is quite a learning curve

I concur with RENOV8R. you can build one yourself, but when all is said and done, you may not get the performance you want. I was also going to suggest a Phantom 3, though it won't give you the collision avoidance capability - for that you will need to spring for the Phantom 4 or Mavic. Learning how to fly will take lots of practice - do you expect your dad to fly this thing or will you do it? You may need to assess your dad's ability to control something like this by trying out a small cheap quadcopter.
