Cant get the axis spin right

I have a quad I built (newbie alert) using the KK2.1 controller. I have it just about tuned for level flight, but when I try to turn it on axis (move left stick left/right, mode 2 controller), the motors wind up severely and the copter jumps up then drops like a rock. I have to slam the throttle forward to regain control height .
Is there a setting I am missing somewhere ?
 
Well you have to turn autolevel to stick mode in misc. settings. Otherwise it switches on the AUX channel (5). Sounds like another problem though. Can you give more information as to what it is doing. with autolevel off you still have stabilization.
 
I have it figured out. it turns out I needed to re-calibrate the stick throws.
