Battery and ESC compatibility

I’m making a parts list for my first drone, I have been recommended to use a 3S lipo for the other parts I have chosen but the ESC’s I chose say 4S. I am assuming this will cause a problem, should I switch the ESC’s to 3S?

Yes ESC ratings are maximums, max current and max voltage the components they are made of can handle, if higher voltage or more current is drawn due to large motors relative to ESC capabilities then you'll have a problem (smoked ESC). If ESC is rated for 100V it can handle power up to that amount but no more.
