Any suggestions for 500 build

So I've ordered a few goodies for a 500 class quadcopter build, but haven't decided on the actual frame yet. Not interested in a reptile or dead cat style, I'd like to keep to a traditional X-frame. I've looked at a couple on HK like the Q500 and SK480 but wondering if there's one that's a favorite with the 500 class crowd? Thanks

I'll have a look. I've already ordered Sunnysky 890kv motors and Afro 25A ESC's, I'll have to see if they can handle a 650 frame

Ok I'm about done researching, the more I look the more complicated it gets. So here's what I've gone with:

Frame:

This should get me started, I'm in no rush to get this done. Overall weight is a bit more than originally planned so I had to go with a lower kv motor, should be in the right range for this build but let me know if it's not as I'm going in blind. I'm going to start with 12" props and 3S 30C 5800 mah Lipo and see how that works. I was really set on the Naza M FC but

The gimbal you reference looks very much like the stock gimbal that shipped with the XK Innovations X380 quad… if it is indeed similar, I'd be a little wary of the mounting plates - they're made from a hard plastic - it doesn't take much of a hit to cause them to crack/break in a crash (ask me how I know).

Incidentally - looks like Tarot have released a 550 frame with folding arms: http://www.tarot-rc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=125_126&products_id=1541 (maybe excuse some of the Engrish in the product description: "Our repair parts are sold, from worries Friends looking back you die"….!)

I would pick the Tarot flight controller everyday over the naza :)

I have flown the e600 and it is really good quality if it fits in the budget.

Do you have the Tarot FC? Just wondering if you use the GPS puck that comes with it as I've read it sometimes takes a while to get GPS lock, and if you could suggest a good GPS antenna. Also what OSD module? One other thing I was wondering, with these larger multicopters do most people use a video monitor for FPV instead of goggles or is it just a matter of preference?

I do. It does not take too long to lock in. I did not realize that different pucks were available. I do have the OSD, but never used it lol.

I use both a monitor, and goggles. I find myself using the monitor more often, but I enjoy the goggles more if that helps.

What about an H frame? Loads of storage and good strong design.


Might also take a look at some of the builds on longrangerc.com.

That's amazingly smooth, thanks. so that would be in GPS mode?

I seriously considered one, but went with the HMF U580 Pro. I'm a big fan of integrated PDB's and the fact that it folds up. And the retractable landing gear is just too cool

It's been a while, but I finally get to bump this thread. U580 frame arrived today. I missed the courier for the Tarot FC so I have to pick it up at the depot tomorrow. All the rest of my orders should trickling in pretty steady so it's BUILD TIME!!! Can ya tell I'm stoked hahahaha
