Advice on equipment for first build

Hi all,

I'm a newcomer to the concept of home built quads and have started building my own. So far I have the frame built from scratch with aluminium sheet and 12mm tubing. I have the motors and props installed and I'm looking for a bit of advice on the lipo etc.

I'm not sure I picked the right motors, I just bought these in the early stages when I knew a lot less than I do now and I'm not sure they are ideal. I have (4) 1000kv A2212/13T motors with 10 x 4.5 props.
The whole outfit is shaping up to be about 1kg before I add the battery which I'm allowing about 400g for so all in, the whole thing should be 1.4 kg or just under. (I've allowed for a gopro without a gimble)
I'm wondering what the best battery would be to give me a reasonable flight time and not add too much weight.
I had planned to keep the total weight to just over 1kg but all that gear adds up quickly so this is where I'm at now. On the subject of total weight, if these motors and probs do turn out to be ok, is there any scope for adding extra weight in the future i.e a gimbal or canopy example?

I'd also like some advice on a decent charger that will charge me back up quick enough if possible.

For tx/rx I was thinking about the Turnigy 9x Mode2, am I right? seems like this is the one most suitable at a reasonable price.

How big, and how heavy is the frame? Aluminium is great (What I built my frame from), but it does have a few setbacks, like vibrations and weight.

Great Tx, for the FCB 'd consider an APM or a KK depending on budget, size, and type of flying. 1000k/v are fine probably, maybe a little smaller than you should have to handle decent flight time, aluminium frame, and a gimbal, but it should be fine. If you can get two batteries that might be better, and just swap them out in the feild, if not then a mutistar 10C 5200mAh is just fine.

Great, thanks for the advice. The frame is 580mm diameter although I could easily reduce this to 500mm if it's a better size? the aluminium frame itself weighs about 320g before I ad anything. What exactly is affected by frame diameter from a design point of view? as a design consideration, how do you decide on an optimum diameter? do you have a rough idea of flight time with that battery if my total weight is about 1.4kg?

If AUW is 4 kg then you should have around 15 minutes flight time with 5200mAh. Leave the frame big, I just upped my 370mm frame to a more than 700 mm and am adding two motors haha. Bigger frame means it takes longer to re stabilize, but also that it stays more stable, for this type of build that is what you want.
