About to buy -- NEED HELP!!

Hi all,

New to the sport, but absolutely loving it. Been flying toy quads for a few months and ready to move up to racing Fpv. Have spent the last few weeks researching all avenues for getting an FPV racer. I do want to build but don't trust my technical ability at this stage so would rather buy RTF just to get into it and practise at high speed. Then build further down the line.

I'm looking at purchasing the Walkera F210 and Fat Shark Dominator V3 goggles, but my question is:

What video receiver should I get?? I don't fully understand all the technical differences between say 2.4 and 5.8 and when I look at different retailers online, some are selling the drone in 2.4 and some in 5.8. Can the dominator run both?? I'm mainly gonna be flying in local commons and open areas, may go between a few trees and obviously want to test the height and distance capabilities and understand all frequencies have different pros and cons, but would just love to get some tips from anyone who's been doing this a bit longer.

Many thanks

Thanks Jackson,

If the radio and FPV are different, I know this is gonna sound so dumb, and I'm already cringing that I'm gonna ask, but as I said, I'm new to this -- do the radio and FPV both have to be the same in order for it to work?

Actually, just the opposite. They need to be different frequencies so they don't cause interference with each other.

goodness, how confusing. So how do you link the goggles to the camera on the drone?

Also, where do you find out about all these things? Is it just general knowledge? I don't ever remember learning about this at school!

Welcome to the wonderful world of quadcopters. 10% build and fly, 90% research. Everything you need to know can be found on Youtube (and here hahaha) As for your question in very simple terms, the camera is connected to a wireless transmitter which sends a signal to a wireless receiver connected to the goggles. Here's a simple diagram of a basic onboard wiring

Thank you, RENOV8R.

That's very helpful indeed. Am enjoying very much being a student of this great new sport.

One final question and then I'll stop wasting everyone's time.

As I said in my post, I'm purchasing the Walkera f210 and Dominator V3 goggles. On the drone description is says "with the latest F3 flight system, the ESC and 5.8G video.....". And then it says the DEVO 7 controller is 2.4Ghz.

Can you please just tell me, flat out, what receiver should I buy to put in the dominator goggles?

Not overly impressed with the image quality from the expensive Fat Sharks when they are not used with their own Immersion VTX.

Chatty Cathy has the same combo here.

You can skip ahead to ~ 5 min for actual video.

Yeah, I saw this video before precisely because he has the same setup, and tbh I wasn't that impressed with the video quality, it looks like the signal goes in and out quite a lot. I was thinking it might be to do with the circumstances of where he's flying it.

So the immersion VTX is a video transmitter that goes in the quad, and send the video signal back tot he goggles? I would need to install it and possibly solder it in? I'm not too sure I'd be able to do that :S, or at least not do it well.

Are you saying that for fat sharks to work the best they need to be operating on all their own brand tech?

I think something that might help you understand a bit better is that your goggles aren't technically "connected" to the quad. The transmitter sends out a signal, and if you're goggles are on the right channel they will pick up that signal. Also make sure you get a reciever for the goggles. Dominator have a modular design so you can use different frequencies, but the drawback is that they don't come with one at all. That's why I got attitude v3s instead. They came with a 5.8ghz reciever.
