FPV Goggle vs VR Headset.
Why do I need an expensive FPV Goggle when I can use a cheap VR , slap the smartphone inside and I can go FPV on any camera drone I have?

You don't need fancy goggles they are nice for blocking out glare if they fit your face better though and will typically have more options for receivers, some are also higher def than most smart phones and/or have higher refresh rate which can help reduce latency (in general less latency since goggle processors doing for the most part one job each vs smartphone OS managing a lot of apps and background stuff). Cheap goggles are basically what you're saying if look up eachine offerings or cheaper box goggle options from DJI even it's effectively what you're saying plus dvr.

I would also add that If we're talking camera drone & smartphone, it's probably not a system using the transmitters & receivers that the expensive goggles are built around.

Correct. I am talking about the "toy drones", i.e. Eachine E511S GPS, SJRC Z5 GPS, XK X300 Optical Flow drone, etc.

I started out on an Idea7 drone (mavic knockoff that uses phone app for video/ controls) along with Google cardboard type vr goggles.

The picture quality is actually crisper and more vibrant than analog, but for freestyle (or generally any serious flying) the latency is so crazy that by the time I'd see an obstacle I'd have already crashed into it. Plus I suspect with phone doing double duty of processing and pumping out live video really slows down response time.
Essentially cheap wifi drones have super slow reflexes.
Basically, what the other posters said, but dumber. (Hope I understood question right. Not sure if you're talking about putting an analog receiver on a phone inside vr phone-holder goggles, which is super heavy on the face; or a cheapie wifi drone)

You could always use do not disturb option too pull down on Android. Also regarding range you can get usb-c compatible vid output receiver then don't have to rely on built in wifi could use some more advanced receivers but yah effectively ground station which can be a little cheaper but still not cheap setup.
