UDI U818A-HD Review
Posted on February 1, 2016 by worldofquads
What is the UDI U818A-HD?
The U818A is a beginner’s quadcopter that starts around $90 and features a 2 MP camera that shoots 1280 by 720P video. It flies for around 7 minutes and is practically unbreakable. It is smooth and stable in flight and much larger than other drones that come at similar prices. These features make it a good quadcopter for anyone starting out in the hobby.
Specs
The U818A is an impressive looking drone and is much bigger than most of the “toy-grade” drones. Its large size allows it to hold up a little better in the wind than smaller drones like the Hubsan X4 or the Blade Nano QX. The protected propellers and large structure make this drone almost invincible and allow the quad to survive its fair share of crashes. The total wingspan of the craft is a fairly large 474 mm. The controller is simple and looks very nice. It has the standard two joysticks, buttons to fine-tune the drone, and displays your current throttle. It feels very nice in your hands and is comfortable for long periods of use. Overall, the U818A-HD is very nicely manufactured and uses high quality-parts.
Flight
One thing that you’ll notice almost immediately upon flying the U818A-HD is how stable it is. The U818A is the best of both worlds, combining the speed and maneuverability of smaller quadcopters and the stability of larger quadcopters. The u818A has two flight modes. Mode 1 limits the turning and climbing speed of the drone and is perfect for beginners or people just getting into the hobby. Mode 2 turns all of these limits off and allows the quad to make sharper banks and climb at its max speed. I found it best to start using Mode 2 after 2-3 days of practice with the drone. There is also the ability to do a simple flip by pushing the 360 degree eversion button on the controller.
Camera
One of the main selling points of this quad is the camera. It shoots 2 MP photos and videos in 1080P. The pictures are nice and the videos are great for the price you are paying for the drone. Be careful when recording because if the battery of the quad runs out, your footage will not be saved.
The Verdict
The UDI U818A-HD is a perfect entry-level drone, especially for someone interested in getting into aerial photography. It flies well and is extremely stable, an important factor in a beginner drone. The camera quality is pretty good, about what you’d expect for a drone of the price range. The 2 modes of flight are very helpful for beginners and allow you to maximize your skills before being able to fly faster and more aggressive. The two downsides to the quadcopter are the limited battery time and the fact that you pretty much can’t fly it in wind.
Pros:
-1080P Videos
-Stable Flight
-2 Flight Modes
Cons:
-Battery
-Ability to Fly in Wind
