Running Drone's 12s Motor with two 6s lipo?

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum and seeking some advice. My team and I are building a drone for a competition, but we lack experience in this area. We are considering using a 12s motor for our drone. However, during my research, I've come across numerous warnings and negative reactions, such as "Don't use it" or "You'll explode." This has left me quite confused.

Could anyone with experience in this matter provide some guidance? What are the potential risks of using a 12s motor with 6s lipos, and what would you recommend we do?

Hi using a 6 cell battery on a 12 cell rated motor just means you will only get half the rpms from the motor , the KV of the motor tells you how many RPM per I volt of battery power put in , I would worry more if you were using 12 cell battery on a 6 cell motor as it will over rev the motor and yes it can explode
Your have to be careful what prop size your going to use as the motor is going to be under power

Yup you aren't gonna run into electrical problems with "undervolting" a motor but if you overdo it for any given component in the chain then that component can easily pop/cook. Motors designed for 12S but only supplied with 6S the worst case scenario is it doesn't turn over (motor doesn't motor), or you just have "weak" output/efficiency for the extra weight you're carrying around. If you stack two 6S in series to make 12S and run the motor off that you'll be getting the full oomph out of it, but 12S batteries are getting well into the pretty dangerous/easy to vaporize things with or start a fire that is very hard to put out.

From my knowledge i heard about a 12s motor is designed to operate at a higher voltage than a 6s LiPo can provide. This means that when using a 6s LiPo battery, the motor may not reach its optimal performance, resulting in lower speed, reduced torque, and overall poor efficiency. Running a motor at a lower voltage than it’s designed for can cause it to overheat. The motor may draw more current to compensate for the lower voltage, leading to excessive heat buildup, which could damage the motor and surrounding components.
