Old school "toy" hybrid build.

Toy Quad Builder
Hi guys..new here to the forum and, just wanted to show you all my first ever quad...Instead of buying a complete quad and, accepting the pros and, cons that come with one model, i decided to piece together one myself using the best attributes from a number of models to create one.

Having been new to quads, i didnt see it a wise thing to invest a larger sum of money into something that i wasn't sure if i would keep interest in or not so, i decided to take a fun low cost route and, im happy i did so, here it goes...ill be using thumbnails as the pics so just click for a larger image.

I chose the Vitality H36 frame... Having done alot of research, it seemed to be the lightest frame in its class at the time so, thats what was chosen.

Next up were motors...of most all the models i researched and watched youtube videos on , i was after one with some speed so ,the easy choice for me at the time was the UDI U816 motor and boom assemblies...These 720 motors packed a punch back then and, today are still considered in the top 3 best 720 motors they offered back then...Number one would be the syma x1 motors that were actually Chaoli motors.. second the Hubsan x4 motors..and 3rd the UDI 816 motor , it was a fair enough decision to go with the UDI motors as it came with 3mm x 3mm carbon booms which i also needed so, i killed 2 birds with one stone as the price was right.

Next i needed to decide on a FCB that had good stability and good yaw as well as provide good power to the motors but, most important ,one that would bind to the frysky protocol... The only radio i had was the controller that came with my WL Toys V911 copter ..The decision was a simple one with the Vitality H36 FCB based on performance, price and, protocol compatibility...The top dog back then was the Walkera Ladybird... The hubsan x4 and, the Vitality H36 were the closest things to that model in terms of flight quality and performance....The ladybird V1 is still considered today the best of its kind offered back then.

So, now the decision for props was not an easy one...i wanted good lift but , also not at the expense of flight time or efficiency and , too much strain on the motor....Through some research and, some advice, i kept the prop size to 55mm and, selected the Mini Pet props...They provide wonderful lift and create very good speed for 720 direct drive motors.

Now all that was left was to choose a canopy and, some batteries..For batteries, i had heard many great things about the stock UDI U816 250mah batteries and, decided to use those, which im glad i did...they charge more like a higher capacity cell and last a good while, as well as provided very good punch..Im not sure of the C rating on these batteries but its enough to supply great performance....These are very good batteries and, if you can still find some today i highly recommend them.

To cut through some of the other bits and pieces, ill just move on ton showing the quad with the 2 canopys i chose for it...One was the MJX100 UFO canopy and, the other, the mini pet canopy.. (Walkera lady bird clone)..I painted the mini pet beetle canopy with a black sharpie as you can tell to give it a sort of stealthy type look.

The weight for this build turned out to be in the higher end range of 33 grams with the mini pet canopy and, it just tips the scales to register 34 grams with the MJX100 canopy...My scale is not a precision one used here so, the numbers arent precise weights but its close enough for now for me....Weights are with a battery installed, of course.

I plan to lighten this up a bit with trimming down to the bare essentials of the frame and, i have a set of picnicquads standard 7mm motor holders coming as well for it to replace the stock motor holders which weigh about 1 gram each...The picnic holders are advertised to weigh .20g each complete....so, this should drop a weight and, help lighten things up a bit.

I will post up more pics and changes in weights as i make progress...i know i have a smaller more precision scale someplace..just need to find it.

Thanks for looking and, i have a new project coming up ill be sharing as well...It should be quite the little speed demon for less money than one might think.

Great job on the frame hahaha. A friend of mine on facebook made a lego toy grade quadcopter and got to be interviewed by a local news station.

Thats what i like about the toy quads..you can make one out of popsicle sticks or even cardboard...lol

The frame is going to get some major weight reduction surgery..Everything is stock and as purchased for now...The motor holders and frame is about all i can do to lighten it besides using a smaller battery ,which i dont care to use.

Haha, that is very true. Some zipties, glue and you can make anything.

So, i found my precision scale and, did some weighing of the stock components...The frame weighs in at a poultry 1.1g...One of the reasons i chose this frame from the start as it was the lightest offering at the time.

The new Picnic motor holders are said to weight .20g complete for each one..I removed just the bottom section of the 2 piece UDI motor holders and just that small piece alone weighed .20g..I expect maybe more of a weight loss with the new holders than expected...the parts have shipped so, im expecting them in a few days.

Im hoping for somewhere below 30g with a 250mah battery..thats amazingly light...the battery weighs 8.1 grams by itself...So im looking at maybe 21 22g for the quad alone.

I was researching Hyperion batteries and, found a G3 CX 240mah that claims 7g in weight..If this is true ill be picking up quite a few of those to drop yet another gram of weight.

Im not so sure something this light will be all that great outdoors in wind but, indoors or calm conditions outdoors should be a very exciting flight.

Ill post up pics of the weights as soon as i receive my parts.

Only in this hobby would you be concerned with dropping a paperclip's worth of weight hahaha.

Hey, 1 gram is alot on these little quads lol.

I want as little of throttle as possible to maintain hover and manage a decent cruising speed for motor life and efficiency...Id like to see 8 minutes or more of flight time while others might get 5 or 6.

The lighter it is the less amps the motors will need to draw and ,should improve flight time and ,the life of the motors but, when wanted, i should be able to cause a "sonic boom" at full throttle and full forward pitch..lmao.

Hahaha, be sure to post videos!

Yay!...I got some parts in to keep moving forward.

Very tiny PicnicQuad 7mm motor holders and, Hubsan X4 props.:)

I like that...id like to do something brushless, eventually...May not be that small though..lol

The BayangToys X9 ( the best blade nqx clone made so far) i was told weighs under 20g with the stock 150mah battery...Thats quite a nice little quad for the low $20.00 (US) range as an RTF...thats one of the quads im purchasing next.

Ok so here is some weight loss measurements.

As advertised, the PicnicQuads motor holders are indeed .2g each...The entire stock UDI motor holder assembly weighed in at .6g, for a total of .4g heavier which is a total 1.6g more weight for the stock holders...Thats a considerable amount of weight loss...Jenny Craig would be proud.
20151010_010943.jpg 20151010_010824.jpg20151010_024940.jpg

The frame was weighed in at 1.1g...Removing the battery holder and all excess, revealing only the X portion of the frame was a weight loss of .6g for a total of .5g for the main frame.
20151010_005547.jpg

So, in all a total of 2.2 grams less weight so far.

I got around to switching out the motor holders but still have to re route the wiring and get everything soldered up before i can do a test flight.
What a mess with the motor wires..sigh.

Friend on facebook uses zip-ties to mount his motors hahaha, maybe a dab of super or hot glue if you are worried about them coming out, don't know how much the weight reduction is worth.

Probably a dab of hot glue once i get them all set in the same height.
