I have begun the process of building my first quadcopter. My goal is to build one that is able to easily carry a GoPro around, not neccessarily for fpv, but possibly being to add fpv later! I have been mostly looking HobbyKing for my parts and have a made list of components.

For my frame I have the Hobby King Flip 230 Super Light

My motors are Multistar Elite 2204-2300KV

My ESC are Afro Slim 20 Amp

My Flight Control is the MINI MWC Flight Control
This seems to give me quite a few options for adding gps and fpv later. My question is: how complicated is it to set this FC up? Is there one that is can give me similar upgrade options (Mainly Gps and FPV) for cheaper?

I have a Turnigy TGY-i6 for my transmiter

The weight of all my components, is around 1500 grams. My GoPro weighs in at 175 grams, bringing my weight to somewhere around 1675 grams.

Are these parts all compatible with one another? What parts would you recommend instead? Are there any other websites to check for parts? Are there any tips for a first time builder?

Thanks in Advance!

Hi mate welcome to the forum , good list , now mini quads like this 250 normally run a 1500mah 4 cell battery ,the motors will only take 3 cell max , I dont know if you have room for a larger 3 cell ,will need to check sizes ,I had a look the 3 cell works out bigger and the weight is about 100grms more , you may be better to look for a motor thats runs on a 4cell , the set up you have will need a big 3 cell 3300mah or bigger to get the flight times in
Also you need a bec as the esc does not have one so you have no way to power the flight board
if you use ecalc.com this will tell you if the set up will work and approx flight times , just put weight of frame plus camera then tell it without drive so it works out motor weight and esc etc
If you get stuck give me a shout

Thanks so much for the info! I have revised my order to have a 4s battery and and corresponding motors. Is there a specific BEC I should get, other then one that is compatible with a 4s battery? I am looking into a getting a cheaper FC. Do you have any suggestions? Are there any Wiring or connectors I should get when I order?

Hi mate if your not worried about GPS then the KK2.1.5 hard case is very stable with the right software on it , if you go for the KK get the flash tool and you can then put on steveis1.8s1pro on it and that is very stable on default setting , the other one to look at is the nase32 flys well on the default settings too
As for BEC the one I linked should be man enough ,if you see another one put a link on here and I will check it for you
Must have list
blue lock tight
heat shrink
male to male servo leads
4/6 channel receiver and transmitter
connectors for esc to motor( i dont use these as i have had them let me down I solder the wire once I know motor is turning the right way )
Your need a power board or make a loom up if you can solder this is the better way keep weight down
I am going to put up a video to watch

Okay i've chosen the KK 2.1 hardcase for my FC. Does the turnigy TGY-6i come with a receiver or do i need to get it separately? I didnt see your bec link but would this one work? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18784__7_2V_4_5A_UBEC_2_5S_Lipoly_6_23v_.html
I also have a simple 4 way powerboard! I also changed my Esc's to ones that have 3.5mm connectors while still staying at 20amp's, just to make all my connections match. I havent picked out any props yet. Do you have any suggestions I'm assuming I can get at least 6 inch props to run with my 20 amp motors?
I will be ordering soon and everything is starting to come together and make sense! I have watched several quadcopter tutorials on Youtube.
Ill look through each item again to make sure everything is compatible before I do my final order!

Hi mate did you order the flash lead for the KK as your need to flash with Steveis1.8s1pro, it will make the quad fly so much nicer
The tgy-6i has a receiver its not small so if frame is 250 or less it will be a tight fit if you look at the size
The BEC is a switching one so will stay cooler and will do great
I had this power board just check to make sure the XT60 is soldered right ,mine failed due to no solder on it at all lol
6 inch props with a 3 cell will max at 9.9 amps on the motors you listed at the start of this thread

I am planning on getting the flash lead with my order. I was considering making the jump from the 250 to a 450 frame. Would there be any down sides to doing that?
Here are the Motors I am planning on ordering NTM Prop Drive
and I have got a 4 cell battery instead of a 3 cell. Multistar 4S
If I do go with the 450 frame, could I get away with larger props?

Hi mate well I used the 1100kv ntm motor i had them on a 450 with 10x4.7 props , megga powerful and very fast , I think it will fly very nice on that set up (450) just use carbon fibre blades , here is a video of my 450 same motors but plastic blades at one part it hits the floor this is due to flexing in the plastic blades when you add power the blades bend not lift so quad touched down
