Noob questions

OK so I'm not a total utter noob but I am to racing quads and acrobatic stuff and I have a couple of questions. Just got hands on a Vortex Pro race quad and have finished setting it up (somewhat) correctly as I can happily get it in the air for a minute or so and then cram into something (mostly the ground) but I'm getting used to it. Hovers nicely and stable as long as I don't try to make it move. Basically the thing is so damned twitchy I'm finding it hard to handle off the bat. I have about 30 sets of props and I'm expecting to use em, but would love to know if there's anything I can do in clean-flight to slow down the crazy sensitivity?

Second question is a bit of an issue I'm having. currently when it's sitting flat with 0 throttle it doesn't do anything funny...however when i pick it up and tilt it the rotors spin up to try and stabilize it even with the throttle at nothing. SO what have i done wrong in the setup?

I've been through the manual multiple times but it seems a tad lacking in detailed information of this type...

hmmm - so in the last few hours (no i refuse to sleep when i have new toys) I've also gone through and setup my flight mode switch successfully...turns out i was also in Accro/Rate the whole time. I'll play with the PID settings a bit as well.

According to the stuff I've been able to dig up if i stick to angle mode for now and reduce the stick response (make it less aggressive) i should be able to get things at a learning level right? Probably play with the RC setting to bring down how aggressive the movements are and maybe reduce the rate adjustments as you suggested as well.

That sound feasible?

I always forget about people being in acro/rate and describing it as jumpy and out of control or too sensitive. Thats all I fly in now so forget. Whats funny is a lot of that jumpy out of controll is the pilot. You are on to something. Try out the more stable modes first and rate should reduce some sensitivity and the speed which the quad responds. Word of caution though... When you are ready for flips and rolls the rates need to come back up. I crashed a lot trying to get the rate speed of flip and rolls fast enough to not smash into trees or the ground. Broke a few things during that transition.

Yeah, that's quite a handful to start with, but sounds like you're getting a handle on it. As far as your motors spinning up when you tilt it, that's an easy fix. Go into the CLI of your Cleanflight GCU and enter: enable motor_stop (Don't forget to hit save). This will prevent motors spinning up when your quad is armed.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm now able to do circuits round the field with no crashes hah! All I can say is holy cow this thing has some power behind it...even with the throttle changes its sometimes fighting back lol. Much lighter touch required than the larger guys I'm used to!
