motor max limit on my first build

I'm just starting to buy components to build my first quad.

So far I have an S500 frame, and I just picked up some SunnySky 2412S 980kv motors.

I've thrown all the specs into ecalc and I think its looking OK?

I'm not sure if I should go 3s or 4s?

If I go to 4s with the 10" prop the motors are running just under the 300w limit, is this pushing them too hard?

So I guess I have to choose between;

3s & 10" - 19min flight time / thrust weight = 2.6
4s & 8" - 21min flight time / thrust weight = 2.6

4s & 10" - 25 min flight time / thrust weight - 4 (but running motors close to max)

I'm not sure about your expected endurance times. Looking at your image, I came up with a different all AUW than Ecalc. I summed up the following: aircraft weight - 1100 g, motors - 62 g (x4) = 248 g, FC - 25 g and battery - 119 g = 1492 g, which is more than the 1112 Ecalc computed.

But going with the 1112 g number, you're gonna need twice that in terms of thrust => 2.23 KG. Looking at the Sunnysky specs, you're gonna need around 556 G thrust from each motor, and that seems to imply around 6.2 A draw or total draw of 24.8 A. with a 5000 mAh lipo, I estimate a flight time of 12 minutes.

Thanks for the info. You're right - I was looking at the hover flight time, the mixed flight time is 12.6 min with a 5000mah battery. but I could get a 8000 or 10000 mah battery instead?

I'm new to this so just looking for input/recommendations on my build plan.

full build plan;
Frame: s500
Flight Controller: Ardupilot APM 2.8
Motors: SunnySky x2412s 980kv
ESC: Afro 20A Slim Multi-rotor ESC (SimonK Firmware)

My inclination would be to go with the 4S lipo and 8"props. The larger props will make your motors work harder and I would avoid that.

Hey Nick.........I just got done with an S500 build. I have Hobbypower 2212 motors running 1045 props. My battery is a 3s 25c 7000mah. In the configuration below I had just completed flights with a total duration of 22 minutes. My battery was down to 11.3v. But I'm not "carrying" any weight except for the battery.

Hey Dragger, sounds like my build will be pretty similar to yours. Good to know I can get that kind of flight time on a 7000mAh batttery - Thanks!
