Metal Screws, Standoffs and Bolts?

Hi everyone,

After finally getting my ESCs I am starting to put everything together for my first build. However, I did not receive enough nylon standoffs for the build. I am an IT Techie however and have motherboard metal standoffs, bolts and nuts coming from my ears and was wondering whether I could use them to mount my FC and PDB. I understand that if something electric were to touch them, they would cause issues, however I am going for a very clean build and there would be no chance of that.

Would the M3 holes be able to contribute to any form of electrical charge being transmitted into the metal standoffs at all?

All in all, is this a bad idea and why?

The fact that the board itself is non-conductive is enough to isolate it from the mounts. Nylon standoffs are more for weight reduction and cost savings. You'd have no problem using aluminum standoffs, however you could isolate them from the fcb/pdb with nylon washers if you had any kickin' around

I don't know what size you're building but here's how I typically set up a miniquad with flight controller stacked on top of the PDB220X 005.JPG

I have just been watching videos and playing around with my dad's 3DR Solo up till now, and I cannot wait to get it going! Just a few more essential parts to go... Like a battery

On a more serious note, I was one of those people who bought one of those 4-in-1 ESC's (Afro ESC 20A Quattro Race Spec) and I have read around that having your ESC so close to your Nase32 could mess up the barometer because of a magnetic field which the ESC creates. Firstly, is this true and secondly, how far do you think would be an acceptable distance from the ESC block?

I personally don't think it causes any interference, these things just don't put out that much problem. Your biggest problem is going to be where the hell you're going to put it. Also, you'll probably have the barometer switched off most of the time. I've got 3 flight modes set up. Rate, Horizon and Horizon with Baro. Hardly ever use it, the baros on these are pretty sensitive and greatly affected by wind and propwash. It makes my quad fly all goofy

Phew, that is a big relief! I just tried it and it all seems to fit (snugly). It looks a bit ridiculous but oh well. Gotta test everything hey!

Do you perhaps know of a guide or a diagram or such which I could use as a reference while I am building? There dont seem to be many out there that explain much in detail.

Okay fair enough, final question:
I am using a Matek XT60 PDB which has power pads for 4 pairs of power cables for the ESCs however with my 4-in-1, I have a single pair of red and black power cables. Where would I connect said cables to, on the ESC?

Hey, no need to apologise, we all have to start somewhere and it can be a little overwhelming at first when you're staring a pile of parts and wires. I'm at work with the boss staring ovr my shoulder hahaha but I'll send you a reply shortly on what you need to know to connect everything. BTW that Matek board is SWEET!

Just thinking on your setup, you don't really need to use the matek,as the Quatro 4 in 1 IS your power distribution board. Doh

You don't have to worry, the Rev 5 Acro doesn't have a barometer, just gyro & accel
